Hi, Willow!

Ummm...nope, it's not a joke. It's my life. I had the duodenal switch less than 11 months ago. We have different eating requirements/post-ops lifestyles than the RNY or LapBand.

I am still losing well, but I am hoping to make or get close to my goal of losing 189 pounds in 12 months. Sooooo I am posting what I eat, in the hopes that I will be accountable at keeping the simple carbs at bay--they could slow down my weight loss. I have about 10-15 more pounds to go, so every little bit helps.

To learn more about the DS weight loss surgery, you can check out the DS forum here or www.dsfacts.com.

Have a good day!

Dear Nicolle:

You DO realize that sugar is a simple carb, right?  I know that you are very knowledgable, but the sugar and flour in the cookies are simple carbs, and if the pita for the gyro is white, that is also simple.  Any WHITE flour and sugar are the simplest of carbs.  Actually, if the potatoes are white, they are simple carbs too.

Maybe that is why you are having a slow down in your weight loss?  I know that DS is different, but a simple carb is a simple carb no matter what.

Just a thought..........
Have an awesome day and STAY WARM!

Yep, I do know. "If it's white, don't bite" used to be my pre-op mantra. I used to believe that, but my new experience is causing me to take a look at that again. I think the DS must bend some rules in the weight loss phase or something.

I have NOT had a slow-down in weight loss, as the chart below shows. I bounce a little, but as I am nearing goal, I am not easing slowly into it like I thought I would. I am still going full-throttle--double-digit loss months. Simple carbs have not affected my weight loss, gas or bowel movements in any way that I have SEEN so far, so I am doing these daily food threads as sort of an experiment. I have eaten simple carbs practically every day for the last 6 months. Frankly LOTS more than I am doing these days, thanks to the holidays. So I will see what the numbers show now that I am cutting back significantly.

If anything, I feel that when I eat more simple carbs, I seem to lose more weight (the weeks around Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays come to mind). I am tracking my muscle on a Tanita scale as well, so I know I am not losing muscle--it's actually fat. It's weird!

I just want to use every tip or resource available to me to make goal (189 pounds lost) by my surgiversary on Feb 22. It's some strange psychological goal I set two weeks ago when I realized how close I am to goal and that it actually could be doable! Hence, the daily food thread posts.

Here's my progress to date:

I am aware of the ds and differring abilities to tolerate foods, but I guess not that knowledgeable. - was just stunned to see a post op was able to eat 10 slices of bacon in a day , mashed potaotes ,  8 cookies and chocolate covered nuts. I guess, with my RNY, and the nutritional teaching I had that the emphasis I had is so much on my health, adequate protein and reduced simple carbs that I didn't realize that 10 slices of bacon in a day  , mashed potatoes, and cookies were a normal for a DS or that you could get by on so little protein. I though ds'ers had to eat higher protein than us.

as an rny I have to rely on lean meats, fish, chicken, lots of vegetables, fruit and I generally eat only whole grains or things like barilla plus high fiber high protein pasta for my carbs to maintian my loss of  over 5 years. I generally need 100 grams of protein ( which I get diet only) and I aim for less than 50 grams of fat, so apparently our needs/goals are very different.

I didn't mean any offense, just genuine curiosity and wanting to learn. thank you.

eons ago when I was on the grad board people would post joke days of eating to freak each other out.

Hi, Willow! Good questions!

I can't speak to how much protein RNYers need compared to DSers, but my surgeon (one of the most experienced DS surgeons out there, who has followed his practice's DS patients for about 15 years) recommends his patients eat 50-80g of protein a day. He is one of those docs who think there IS a limit to protein a post-op should have, as excess, unused protein (since most of us are not body-builders or high-performance athletes) may cause problems with our organs and weight regain.

I'm not sure what you mean about me "getting by on so little protein." I looked over what I ate yesterday and I had 95g of protein, including the roasted edamame I ate before bed and didn't post. I guess it's not clear that I had cream cheese in my eggs and bacon and tons of cheese in my loaded mashed potatoes. Yesterday was a bacon day, what can I say?

Aside from the occasional yummy shake I get at my health club after a workout, I haven't had to supplement with bars or shakes since the early post-op days. As you can see, I do more protein than my surgeon recommends, as I am on the fence on that one and like to hedge my bet!

As to fat, since someone with a DS only absorbs 20% of the fat they consume, fat is not such a big deal. For example, if I ate 100 g of fat, I would only absorb 20g. The current US RDA of fat is 65g for a 2,000-calorie diet. I would have to eat more than 300 g of fat to exceed that! If I don't eat enough fat, I'm told I can become constipated, so it's a balancing act. My cholesterol has dropped from 199 to 116 since my DS, so it's mind-boggling.

I know it's hard to get your brain around this, since it is the anti-diet,. It's actually MY body and I wonder things every day! LOL. Thanks for trying!

As I posted above, I am experimenting with simple carbs. You can read that saga above. Who knows? I may be one of those people who has to eat a lot to maintain my weight. Wouldn't THAT be a switch?

BTW, since you like pasta, have you heard about Dreamfield's pasta? It has less digestible carbs. Something like 41g per serving and then when you eat it, only like 7. Another odd, modified food, but yummy nonetheless.

I think your point is partly right. Our NEEDS may be different, but I think our GOALS are the same: good health for our surgically altered bodies.
