Low Vitamin D Levels

It's a good thing I stay on top of the Kane Center with getting test results!  I finally got a call back today to let me know that my Vitamin D is low and I need to take a supplement for it.  They want me on 1000 iu a day for the next couple of months, until I go for my one year labs in March.  I forgot to ask what the exact number was, but oh well.
Funny thing is that this was a retest from 3 months ago that Quest admitted to messing up tests...thank goodness I got that message huh?

Well I am off to research how bad this is...LOL

Monica -
You may want to ask that they fax  you a copy of the lab work.  Then you can compare the labs next round.  You really do have to be your own advacate.  If you recall, someone forgot to tell me back in July that I was supposed to be taking a B12 shot.  Did not find out until October when I started having my melt downs about how terrible I was feeling.

I have never gotten my labs drawn at the Kane center, I always have them done at my Primary care and then they fax them to Dr Wallace.  That way I get the results from 2 sources and not just rely on one.  I dont trust any of them to be honest.  You are right when you say you have to be your own advocate.

I have low vitamin D too, even from before surgery.  They put me on high dose vit d before surgery and have been on since.  Now on 2000IU day, and it is finally normal.  It is the "newting" that everyone is watching.  It was even on Oprah the other day.  They say it is because we dont get enough sun, and Vit D in our foods etc...  We also need Vit D to be able to absorb calcium properly.  Make sure they checked that too and that is not low.

Good luck!

Hi Monica. You're so right about follow-up with the Kane Center.

I have my labs done elsewhere so I can get a copy even before they do. Hehehe.

My Vit D was low last year and they scared the heck out of me because they left me a voice message (Bessie) telling me to call her about something. This was prior to my banding last May. I was on vacation at the time and had the darnest time getting through to her.

Anyhow, at least you have your answer and a remedy.

WOW, you're almost at your 1st anniversary.

Take care sweetie!

Hugs,
Lucy

How do your primary care Dr's know what tests we need?  there were so many I had that I have never had before....

Kane Center is horrible for getting back to people.  However Donna told me yesterday that they will draw my blood right there next time!

Sorry to hear about the low D, but it IS very common.

You can get the list of recommended labs from your surgeon to take to your PCP if you have an easier time with the PCP.  When they fax you your labs, make note of what is drawn for next time.

I agree about the "be your own advocate" statement.  Even though I have a great surgery team, I need to keep on them about things.  I track my labs using a spreadsheet so I can see what if going on easier.

Tell someone that you love them!

Monica,

I called and spoke to the Nurse for Dr Wallace, I always ask for the nurse, never leave a message for anyone else, and she faxed me the order sheet from their office and I took it to my PCP and they did the labs.

I dont understand why it is so hard to get ahold of people in their office, maybe they are too big and dont have enough staff.  I honestly think it may be lack of staff or training. Everytime I am there, no one seems happy to be doing their job, friendly.  I am not there that often so I just blow it off, but something seems amiss there.  It is not just you, I hear alot of people have that same problem.

Stay on top of them, and make them crazy until you get your results!!!

Hope your levels come up with the Vit D.

Hi Monica. I get the labs ordered from Dr. Guske and then take the order to my hospital and do the labs there. The lab personnel gives me a copy of the results, faxes them to Guske and also my primary care doctor.

It helps that I work in a hospital and the lab staff knows me very well!
