Vitamin D deficiency???

I just got a letter in the mail from Quest Diagnostics that my Vitamin D test that I had done way back for my 6 month post op wasn't done right and is wrong.  They need to retest me...they will do it free of charge too.  What does low Vitamin D do?  I think I'm gonna have to do research now....lol
I have been having some issues and wondering if that's it.

Looks like tomorrow in addition to grocery shopping, I'll be getting more blood drawn too. At least I don't have to fast for it!  lol

Has anyone had a Vitamin D deficiency??

At my one month follow-up my labs showed a D deficiency.  I now supplement with extra D3 (4000 IU/day) and try to get sun as often as I can (the weather doesn't help, but a trip to Florida in Oct. and Arizona in Dec. helped!).  My 3 month labs showed normal.  15 minutes of summer sun is all you need (without sunblock).  Its more difficult with winter sun because it's rarely around but when it is out it's not high enough in the sky.

Vitamin D is what helps our bodies utilize calcium best.   It also affects are bones, kidneys, moods/depression, arteries, and immune system.  So it is important.  Without Vitamin D your body cannot absorb calcium.

Thanks for the info Nancy.  I will be curious to see if mine is low. It never was before, but I never go outside in the sun in the winter...I hate the cold.  I have been soo moody and feeling blah lately and I also have another cold...if you remember it wasn't that long ago that I had one!

Monica, Your vitamin D level should range from 30.0 - 100.0. It will make you tired if it is to low. I think Christina has had an issue with this.

I have low Vit B, Vit D and now thyroid disease.  What gives?  Never had any problems pre-op but I suppose it's a small price to pay.  I've been told that low iron is next so you may want to keep an eye on your iron levels.

And just so you know, I've been told that sun does not really help your vit d level so don't even try the excuse of taking a vacation to a warmer climate!  LOL  Hey, maybe you and I could run away and tell our hubbies it's doctors orders!

Hope you get it all worked out.

Well I had the blood drawn today so hopefully sometime tomorrow they should have my results.  we shall see.  I just had my iron checked on Monday at the gyne's office with a finger ***** one..it was 13!  she said that was awesome!

I do however love your idea of running away to somewhere warmer for a while!  let's go!  lol

Yep!  I had low D.  Funny thing is......in my pre-op testing (2 weeks before surgery) it was so high that she commented that I should "continue taking this".  I called her and said "taking what?"

By 6 weeks post-op, I was deficient.  Fatigue was a big part of it and moody.....HAH!

The doctor put me on a prescription at about 10,000 IUs per day for 3 weeks then told me to take 1000 IU every day after.  This did not really bring the level up very much.  I (on my own--after research) upped it to 4000 IU per day (along with the calcium that has some in it) and my levels are now "normal" but sill lower than I like.  I have also read that Vitamin D3 is the one that we want, and in dry or capsule form.  If it is suspended in oil, it is not absorbed as well.

I have also read that Vitamin D from sunlight is negligible, but I want to go with you and Christina anyway.  I know a great place in St. Pete Beach...............
