Question for all past RNY'ers?????

Good morning Monica!

I get most of my vitamins at www.vitacost.com.  They usually have the best prices.  I take their "house brand" NSI Chewable Calcium Citrate which has 1000 mg of calcium per serving (4 tablets) along with vitamin D3 and magnesium oxide.  The trick here is that from my research, I have learned that "we" only absorb 500 mg at a time, so I break it up into 2 tablets approximately 2 hours apart (with the extra D I need) throught the afternoon.  I also read that we should be taking about 2000 mg per day, hence the 8 tablets per day.

Confusing, I know.

By the way.......don't you take any sublingual B-12????
My doctor had me on that even during the 6 month supervised diet before surgery as she said that we can never get enough of that through food when eating so little.  B-12 deficiency is a pretty scary thing.

See, my Dr didn't go over the vitamin regime very well with me and neither did the nutritionist.  However, when I have had my labs done (all times) everything was in great ranges except for my Thiamine, which is why I take the extra B1 and B100 complex.   My B12 was great they said, so I don't take anything for that.

That is really good that your B-12 is in range!

The other thing that I do is I keep track of my labs and try to get everything closer to the "normal-high" range.  Some of the "normal" range lows are too low for me, like the iron and Ferreitn----when it is in the "normal" range, but low, I feel really tired.  Since it is in the "normal" range, my doctors were not concerned.

Nicole is right.........the doctors are still learning about WLS and vitamins and long range issues.  My basic formula is to take twice as much as they recommend, because it seems like the next time I go, they have adjusted their recommendation UP, and they don't send a letter telling me when they have changed their minds from what they said at the beginning.

Good health to you!!!!!

Please don't worry, the side effects like the hair loss are so worth it in the end.  I did have bad hair loss from about 4 months out and it just stopped in December I would say.  My hair is doing awesome now and looks so much better.  I have also had people tell me that I look way younger than I am since losing weight too.
you will be fine!!

Your a beautiful woman, you'll still look good when your bald.

The hair loss (If you have any) is only tempory and caused by a protein deficency.

If you get the protein in you won't los an, and if you don't get the protein in you may lose a little, but will grow back after you start eating more protein.

And the vitamins? I chew up couple Spongebob vitamins in the AM. Then I chew up a calcium when I drink my cup Decaf a little later it has Vit D in it..  Then I  put a B under my tongue around  noonish.

Hi

I have not had any major hair loss.  I have made sure I get more than enough protein and I take biotin supplements.  I lost a lot of hair when I had gallbladder surgery but not with this RNY.  I did buy a couple of wigs and they are great for bad hair days!

As far as looking skelatol I truly do not see a lot of RNY'ers looking like this.  I so know that older people will have more wrinkles and a turkey neck but I figure if the really bother me, then I will try to do plastic surgery later on.

This surgery was soooo worth it.  I would od it again in a heartbeat.

I'm 2 months out and I have had no hair loss and believe me I'm an expert on hair loss because I lost 50 percent of my hair in my 30s.  Like everyone tells you I take my vitamins and I get in my protein.  I eat my 3 protien packed meals a day and take 50 grams a day of liquid suppliment spread over the day.  So far no additional hair loss.
