1 Month out.
I am officially 1 month post op. I had an open RNY.
I am shocked how little I eat, and how I am still not hungry.
Does anyone have a chart to tell them what kind of calories I should be striving to hit? I am trying t eat protein, but I don't want to over eat.
I am still bearly eating. I feel pretty good, I just can't eat very much.
I also was wondering about when everyone started working out? I tried to do some jumping jacks in the house and felt like my guts were going to fall out onto the floor. I walk a little, but I really hate the cold.
I wish there was a support group out here in Dekalb still. I just feel like I am doing everything wrong, and I don't want to gain a bunch of weight back after a year. If I can learn what is working for people I can adjust my lifestyle to accomplish my goals of losing a ton of weight and keeping most of it off.
I guess it is just insecurity.

I miss the DeKalb support group too!
I would think it's a little early for jumping jacks. My doctor said just walking for the first month for lap RNY so I would think it would be even longer for an open RNY.
I'm a little surprised that your doctor hasn't given you information about what to be eating. My doctor has a whole plan set out. At one month, I was allowed about 1.5-2 ounces of protein at each of three meals. That's it...nothing else besides water and sugar free drinks. I struggled to get to 2 ounces although at about 10 weeks out I'd say I'm at about 3 ounces plus veggies. My doctor doesn't talk to much about calories or at least hasn't so far. They talk about ounces of protein and measures such as a 1/4 cup of veggies.
I understand there is workout equipment at Haish Gym in DeKalb and that the fees are very, VERY reasonable. I'm sure they have treadmills and I know some people from the support group were going there. When the doctor okays it, swimming or water aerobics would be a good workout for you as well.
I'm still struggling with the lifestyle and head hunger is a real demon for me but I'm doing it. I've lost 59 pounds as of this morning and I'm delighted. Of course, I've spent most of the afternoon craving potato chips. I wanted them yesterday but then my co-worker was eating them this morning and now I'm obsessed....I'm headed to the gym as soon as I get off work!

Hi Dave!
"Thinking Twice" gave you excellent advise, and there is not much I can add. I just wanted to say that feeling insecure is NORMAL. We have all tried and failed so many times before that it is hard to believe that this time will be different.
I know that with my Lap surgery, it was walking only for the first 6 weeks, then I was cleared for most anything. Jumping jacks may be too stressful. Maybe you can walk the halls at school? I did a lot of mall walking at first.
You are doing a great job and keep it up!

I had open RNY too and please...don't do jumping jacks yet! lol of course I had Lap RNY the week before my open....lol the open was actually to fix a complication, so I got the best of both worlds.
I know what you mean about wanting to make sure you're doing everything right to get the most benefit of the surgery, you are doing great! do walking for now and don't over do it either. Can you talk to a nutritionist about what you should be eating and stuff? I did that too, it was very helpful. My dr also gave me a paper with everything I could eat and when. Maybe give them a call.
Either way, keep coming here and chatting...it really does help!

I have the same Dr. that Thinking Twice had and another thing that 'our' plan says is to strive for 10g of protein at each meal for the first 30 days, 15g for days 30-60 and 20g for 60-90. But every Dr. is different, we are all protein until month 2...nothing else.

I dont think your can get too much protein. My doc wanted me to get up to 60 g as soon as possible but it took me a while to get there. I think I was 2 months before I reached that goal and then the increased it to 120 g.
Walking is great exercise. So whatever you can do will be fine. Now is not the time to start running your marathons. Those can wait for another month or two.

Dave, I'm not sure how helpful this is, but here is what OH has to say on post-op RNY nutrition:
