Good morning and Happy New Year!

I barely made it to midnight!  I think I fell asleep right after the count down.  I so very exciting lol.  I don't have any plans today, just relax.  I might take my daughter to do some shopping.  I do need to get down to the basement to find my bins of winter clothes.  I know I have some smaller sizes some where and need to find them.  Its great that my clothes are starting to get to big, but I have nothing to wear.  My SIL has some jeans for me hopefully I can get those soon.  The good thing is my closet is no longer overflowing with clothes!  It definetly is a good feeling that my clothes are getting to big.

Have a great day all!

Hi, for me today is a downer I really cannot wait for 2009 to be over!! Sorry all. I spent yesterday after work and last night doing this. Crying Into Tissue The skin around my eyes is so sore from crying and wiping and at times my head is pounding. I received the bad word that my hours got reduced at work to 37 1/2 a week. Basically, I will no longer get paid for my lunch and this means close to $200 less per paycheck. I have to punch out for lunch and back in. There have been whiners in the rest of the village that complained that the civilians in the PD get paid for lunch and we get an extra personal day a year. What those a--holes do not realize is that I many times work through my lunch or at my desk, I do not get overtime either. Whenever I come in early or stay over my shift it is on my own time, but no longer will I do that. I am the only civilian employee with the village that has 29+ years of service (no one else has ever put in that many years). When I first started working at the PD I never even got a lunch time; I had to eat at my radio and say 10-4 in between bites of food. I was never even allowed to leave the building and they frowned upon us to ask to use the ladies room. The village is now being run like a big business and they are treating the employees now like numbers. Evidentally, loyalty means nothing to them, they just bleed us. I cannot wait to get my 30 years in this September so I can get out of there. I do not have to stay for 30 years for my pension; it is just something I would like to do and that is say that I put 30 years in at my job. I have to look into something but I think that they are doing something a little illegal in that they are not giving us 2 15 minute breaks in addition to the lunch time. I basically am on call at my desk during my lunch time when I am the only one in records during my shift. BUT - the village hall and building dept closes down for special lunches at the holidays, is this fair? Oh, the kicker in all this is that the PD's dispatchers still get paid for their lunch and do not have to punch in and out for it. Talk about unfair labor practices!

Hi Christine....look on the bright side...it could have been a pink slip.......at least you still have a job....especially in this economy.
I've never had a job that paid me for my lunch time and I really don't think many others get paid for their lunch either. Good luck getting the info you need regarding breaks.

Please, do not give me that - "a pink slip and at least you still have a job". This completely sucks. I work my ass off. Myself and others are not appreciated, they bleed us. I am bitter. I have been through a lot of burn out there because police work is very stressful, but the village managers do not appreciate what the PD does. They expect us to carry them FOR EVERY PROJECT and then the village hall takes all the glory. I am tired of it as is my chief and supervisors. We are all ready to say F-YOU. The good thing is that they cannot take my pension and have to sell me my insurance by state statute. I am 55 and am vested on my pension.

I agree that it sucks, but how many people are out of a job? How many people out there would have liked to have their work week shortened by 2.5 hours instead of 40 hours? How many people are on the verge of losing their homes because they have no jobs? You really need to count your blessings.

Big hugs to you Christine. It's certainly not fair, you are always going above and beyond your requirements.   Hang in there sweetie!!

Wow Christine,

That really sucks that they are tightening down like that! and likely they know you will work on your lunch.

My two cents - GET AWAY from the desk and do not work on your breaks, Make a lovely sign and prop it up for all to see if you are at your desk " ON MY BREAK"

Don't give in and maybe they will see that you mean business. It really is maddening when there is obvious parity situation with the Dispatchers being paid for their lunch.

When spring hits you can be out the door and take a walk, and the 2- 15 minutes breaks - I would take them anyways, who is going to say something? isn't it required legally when one works an 8 hr day?

Christine, I am really sorry that you are having such a hard time over losing 2.5 hours a week. I do have to agree with the others in what is 2.5 hours when others are losing thier jobs.Life was different 30 years ago, also 10 years ago. No place that I know of pays you for lunch breaks anymore, and personally speaking, we don't get breaks either and we get 1/2 hour for lunch. We use to get paid for travel time to and from our various offices, now we just get milage. If we take a lunch or not, we have to sign out. You have to remember, Itaska is no longer a little village, it has the same problems as any other place. Running localitys  is a business. You may ask if you do have to work through your lunchtime, could you take off that much earlier at the end of the day?  Or, do like the others said, and leave your room. Even if you have to eat in the bathroom, get away from your desk. And if all else fails, quit a few months earlier then you had planned.

Lisa

GMI,

With DW home we have been over dosing on online movies.  We watched The Neighbor, Blind Date, The Darwin Awards and No Country For Old Men yesterday.  We watched Ch 7 from 11:30 until the new year and then a couple of M.A.S.H. episodes.

My hope for the next year is for folks to treat each other with love and respect foregoing selfishness on all levels.

Randy
