Severe REMS sleep

Well, I had my sleep study done and my results came in.  I evidently have something called "Severe REMS sleep".  I guess my eyes move around alot when I am in deep sleep. Don't really understand what that is, but I have to get the CPAP machine and use it before my surgery.  I am so distraut over this and very bummed.  I have never had a problem sleeping, don't wake up, and have never been told that I stop breathing.  I know that these tests will ensure a safe surgery, and will follow the doctor's directions. I just hope that after the surgery and after I lose some weight, I will not have to use this machine to sleep.  I guess I really have a fear of having to use this machine for the rest of my life.

Has anyone heard of this disorder before or have had to use the machine?

Happy Thanksgiving and I 'Thank You' for your responses.

Your eyes move rapidly during a REM sleep..that is normal. What's the problem ??

HI Shar,

Where in Buffalo Grove do you live?  I live right behind Buffalo Grove High School.  I guess I had too many episodes and that since it woke me and my blood pressure changed during this time when I was waking up.  I have a call into the doctor to get better clarification.  I am very upset about this, but what can you do?  If I have to use the CPAP machine for a few months,  I guess I can handle that.

Thanks!!

Well, I did a Google search on the term Severe REMS Sleep and could not really find anything that fits it but a couple links that really did not explain anything. From what I could find on many of the sites regarding REMS sleep is that when a person is in it their blood pressure rises. There might be a connection with that for you. They might feel that the CPAP will help regulate your blood pressure and keep you in a steady breathing pattern.

Thank you both for responding.  I will be calling the Dr today because I received this information from the nurse and she really didn't explain it.  I thought that eye movement was normal too.  That makes sense about the blood pressure.  I shall see what the doctor has to say...this will not upset me any further!

Thanks again!!!

Hi Joy,

I just had my sleep study completed about 3 weeks ago.  I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea.  I also was told that I am getting only 7% REM sleep.  Normal is 20-25%.  So I have to wonder if this could be tied into the severe REMS sleep.

ANYHOW my insurance covered 100% of the machine.  As for the M series. It's small and has a humidifier in it.  It is so quiet that my Husband says it sounds like I am just breathing.  I was so worried that it would keep him awake at night.  He said he prefers it to me not wearing one because I'm not snoring then LOL ME SNORE???  It is a very s*xy look to I must add...NOT LOL.  I still have NOT let him see me in it....the lights go off and I put it on.

He also said that he didn't notice I would quit breathing so it was a real shocker when I was diagnosed with it being severe!

PLEASE don't worry or let it bum you out. It's NOT nearly as bad as I had thought it was going to be.  I am sleeping better and I have weened myself completely of caffeine during this time.  When I wake up I feel awake....and I'm not nodding my head through out the day either.

My Dr. will not even operate on me if I haven't worn it for a month prior to my surgery.

You'll be just fine :-)

Hi Cindy,

Thank you very much.  Yeah, I saw a few pix of the machine!  S*XY!!  LOL!!

Dr. Pieta said that I have minor sleep apnea with severe REMS sleep.   Dr Wallace will not perform the surgery either unless I am using the machine.  I must say that I am very glad that they are checking everything before just jumping in to the surgery!  Makes me feel very confident with the doctors.

Fingers crossed that my insurance covers 100%.

Thanks again Cindy-I appreciate your response!  Good luck to you!!

-Joy.
