Two weeks out and worried

I'm two weeks post-op with RNY. I developed an infection in one of my incisions. It is healing and doing okay. What I'm worried about is my food intake. I'm on a strictly protein diet and have started solid food but I'm forcing myself to eat. I'm supposed to eat 1.5 ounces at a meal and I can't begin to get that in. One ounce is about all I can do. Meats taste dry and grainy, even with gravy. Eggs may or may not stay down; depends on the day. I take a vitamin and diabetes pill before each meal so I think this is part of the problem. But if I take them later, they upset my stomach. And I'm sure the infection isn't helping me feel like eating in the first place plus I'm exhausted from the pain in the open incision.

Anyone have any ideas or just support? I've lost 28 pounds since I started the pre-op diet on Oct. 7 so I feel pretty good about that. Just looking for someone who understands and maybe has some helpful ideas.

Hi
It sounds like u are doing fine...If you aren't tolerating meats or eggs yet its ok. You will in time. Stick with softer proteins like cottage cheese, greek yogurt and things like that. I ate baby food meats in the beginning. I am sure the infection is not helping you to feel any better. Drink protein shakes for now to get at least 60g of protein a day and make sure you are getting at least 64 oz of water including the water that you put in the shakes. If you have to sip all the time and stop 30 min before and after eating that may be what you have to do. Most important is the protein and water and of course your other meds....take them however you need to make it easier. Hopefully you won't need the diabetes medicine much longer. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and you just have to listen to what your body is saying. The amount of calories you are getting in is not something to worry about if you are getting your protein and water. Its a good time now to get into the habit of at least walking every day.
Hope that helps!

Hi

That first month can be real rock on your tummy.  I know every surgeon is different.  I was not allowed meat until 3 months out,  I did a lot of purreed cottage cheese and used a variety of spices and pureed bean soups.  Later I added string cheese.  I also ate yogurt.  It was boring but easy on the tummy.  The protein shakes was where I got most of my protein.  I also use protein drinks that are fruit flavored and have protein in them.  Also have your tried the yummy protein ice cream?  It is basically a protein shake that is processed in an ice cream maker.  I am in love with it and have it twice a day.

I too had an open incision that threatened to become infected.  I was on antibiotics for 2 weeks.  It was sore and drained oodles.  It took about 6 weeks to heal.  But it does heal.

Hang in there.  and Hugs!

You are doing great!  Hang in there, everyone goes through the why did I do this phase.  After two years, eggs one day may like me, and the other day hate me, this is common.  I ate the baby food chicken and turkey sticks, cottage cheese, and pudding with protein powder.  Go at your own pace, everyone is different.
