Medication

Hi!

I'm a newbie here and have a couple questions in regards to medication.

I have health issues that require me to take several pills a day for the rest of my life. Just for kicks yesterday, I crushed a few of the ones that are not available in liquid and mixed them with some yogurt. It was awful... no way am I going to be able to do that twice a day for the rest of my life. Have any of you found something to mix the crushed medication with that will cover the awful taste?

I've been reading alot about RNY since I will be having it the week of November 17th. I think I read somewhere that having to crush the pills was temporary. Does anyone know when you can resume taking pills following surgery? The most important one I take is about the same size as a daily multi-vitamin so I wonder if I will ever be able to take them whole.

I have been lurking here for a few weeks. I learned of this site from a fellow participant at a Kane Center support group. I am grateful for the wisdom here and hope to meet more of you at future meetings.

Thanks so much!

I left the hospital taking my meds whole.  My surgeon said I could have any med that was not bigger than an m & m early out.  So either they can be split or taken whole.  I can do capsules fine.  Funny how they expect us to know what size a m & m is by sight

Hi Marcy and welcome to the board!

The crushing is temporary.  When I left the hospital, I was told nothing bigger than a pencil eraser (about the size of an M&M).  Although that is not the rule at 2 years out, I still adhere to it by spliting anything bigger (my choice) and have no problems with capsules.  My pill splitter was some of the best $ I ever spent.

If a pill has a coating on it that makes it feel "slick" or very smooth, you should at least split it because the coating can inhibit absorption.

When I was first out of the hospital, I needed to open a capsule and pour it into something and I used yogurt or applesauce.  The trick is to use only a very small amount of yogurt or applesauce (a tablespoon or so) then wa**** down with more yogurt or applesauce that does not have any medication.  Believe it or not, you will actually get used to it and it won't seem so awful, and it is only temporary.

Good luck to you and let us know how things go!

I mix my yucky B-1 pill with yougurt and I can't tell.

I was told no pills for at least 6 months, but I did start take a bladder pill yesterday about the size of an eraser...I was nervous, but I know most people on here, do swallow pills.

Just ask your doctor....

Good Luck,
Lynne
