My sister works at a restaurant, and she was telling me that she has has several customers come in with a card explaining that they have had weight loss surgery, and that they can only eat child size food portions. So, it basically asks the restaurant for persmission to purchase a kids meal. I have never seen these, or heard about them. Where could I get one?

You used to be able to print them off of this site and I do not know if you can anymore. I also received a plastic card from my doctor explaining that I had surgery and it shows a diagram of my new stomach etc. Keep in mind that a restaurant is not obligated to honor the card. I have seen people on the main board that get all "huffy" because the manager or restaurant has denied them the discount.

Personally I have never used it because most of the foods on the children's menu are fried and junk. What my husband and I do is get a regular sized meal and then take home the left overs for other meals. We rarely share a meal because we have different tastes in food. We will many times ask for a box right away so we can divide off the portion we are eating right then and put the other aside so we do not sit and graze on the remaining food on the plate.

I received a card from my Dr, after surgery. But, like Christine, I rarely use it. The only time it caomes in handy is at a buffet, where you know it is going to be to much food, and you can't take leftovers home. I generally either take a small portion of my DH meal, or I order soup or chili. Lets face it, its not the food we are going for, its the getting together with friends or family that we want.

Thanks Ladies! The only reason we even brought it up was because I was telling my sister how we had gone to the Golden Corral, and it was such a waste for me to spend the money for an adult buffet, when my boys who ate free ate more than me! lol
My hubby liked the buffet, so I figured it was worth a shot to look into the card so he can actually go back.

I found that you can still print cards here is the link on this site. http://www.obesityhelp.com/magazine/RestaurantCard.html it is under "My OH" when you are signed into your account and then there is a link for Restaurants cards.

I got one from my doctor.  I've never used it.   I only order appitizers or if I order a meal, I take half home for the next day.  I haven't been to a buffet yet though, I might try to use it there for a children's portion buffet.

I have one I got from my Doc but I have never used it! I go to buffets all the time. Our local Hometown Buffet now has a soup and salad bar for $4.99.

I carry one in my wallet, but it's up to the individual manager at times whether or not they will "honor" them.  I usually will just order from the appetizer section, or as others have suggested, automatically asked for a box to go, and portion out my plate before even starting.

Freddy, the owner of our favorite mexican place was very patient with me when I was first banded but by our 3rd or 4th trip in he couldn't contain himself anylonger when he asked..."what's the matter, you used to like my food"!   We laughed as I explained my new Band...and now, he has a box brought to my table without asking!

I took the one from the web site (that Christine listed) and modified it to look a little more official.  I don't use it that often, because like everybody else, I usually order soup or an appitizer.  But when I do show it at restaurants, they generally do honor it and give me a huge discount!  There is a fish boil in Huntley that we go to in the summer and it is $15.95 per person.  I just love it, but cannot eat even a 10th of what I use to eat.  When I showed the card, they gave me the children's price which was somewhere around $7.00!  Granted, I still only ate a small amount, but it was a nice treat.  I'm not sure if the chain buffets will honor the card since they have no way of controlling fraud, but it's certainly worth a try.  I've never had a restaurant not give me some sort of consideration.  If you would like me to make you up a card, just PM me with your info and I can send you one.  All I need is your name, your doctor's name and phone number, and where to send it.  I laminated mine with that peel and stick stuff and it's held up.

Hi Jessy!

I got mine from my doctor's office also.  One side is the "Medical Request" side explaining the surgery and asking that I be allowed child or senior pricing.  The other side is "In case of Emergency" with my surgeon's information.

Golden Corral honors this card and you will be charged the highest child's price (8-12 yr. old).  This is good for me because my family loves Golden Corral, and I don't feel so bad paying for a lot of food I am not going to eat.  I do not know if Home Town Buffet, or Old Country honor this card or not.  As others have said, it is up to the manager at the restaurant.  Golden Corral seems the most familiar and accomodating.

I'm not sure where you are, but Flat Top Grill will also honor this card, and I LOVE to go there.  It is a make your own stir fry place where you can load up you bowl with fresh veggies and the protein(s) of your choice and they will cook it for you.  Very fresh and appropriate for us.  I pay child's price there for one trip and still take home half of it.  (They allow you to take home whatever is left from one trip, unlike most buffets.)

Some child's menus are nothing but junk, so an appetizer or chili would be best, but when you have a family, every little bit helps!

Tell someone that you love them!
