Lack of Vitamin D anyone?

Hey Gang -
I'm just curious if anyone has suffered from lack of Vitamin D and what you did to get your levels up.  My ideal cure would be to move to a warm climate and lay by the water for 3 to 5 hours a day.  But since that is not going to happen anytime soon, I have to figure out another strategy.  I had my blood work drawn about three months ago and it showed that my Vit D level was low.  I've since been taking over the counter supplements and it just seems as if I am progressivly lacking more and more energy.  I'm dragging and I'm getting more sleep then I ever have.  With winter approaching, I'm really concerned at how I'm going to feel with no sun.  Yea, I know about the sun lamps but really don't think that's the answer for me.
I'm going to check out a liquid form supplement to see if that absorbs better.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Christina, I don't have any answers for you just wanted to say I am sorry you are not feeling well, I hope you find the answer soon, . Take care.

Success begins with wise choices I make,I will not let noncompliance be my mistake, The surgery I had was to assist me in changes. My compliance is for a success long range, So I will think before I decide to cheat. Remember the goals I want to meet. For this surgery is not something I was force to do It was what I wanted for a healthy life!

Good morning Christina!

I have low vitamin D and it has been low since my 6 month check up.  Funny thing is, my labs BEFORE surgery showed I was high!  Just goes to show you how quickly things can change.......

We DO get a little Vitamin D from the sun, but  not enough to really bring the levels up.  Recent research has indicated that most people (especially women) are low in this vitamin.  I believe that they also recently changed the threshold for "low"....."Low" is now a higher number than before.

I also had terrible fatigue.  I was also low in iron.  I had one iron infusion over a year ago and have been doing pretty well on that so far.

I now take 3 capsules of 2000 IU Vitamin D3 each day, in the middle of the day (spread out) with my calcium citrate.  The chewable calcium citrate that I take also has 400 IU in each serving.  My total D3 intake per day is then 6800 IU.

My last labs showed that the Vit D was up, but still on the low side, that's when I increased from 1000 IU capsuled to 2000 IU capsules.  New labs will be drawn in October.

I FEEL much better.  I am not as tired and dragging as I once was.

Sorry about the long post, but what I am trying to say is that you may want to take a look at the total IU that you are getting each day.  One pill a day may not be enough to get your level up.  Also, try to take it with your calcium as it helps with calcium absorption.

Oh, one other thing........if the tablet you are taking feels very smooth, make sure to split it or bite it into pieces to maximize absorption.  It a tablet is very smooth, it probably has a wax coating that will hinder absorption.  If it is a capsule, you are probably OK.

Hope this helps ahd you get back to feeling like your old self soon.......

Thanks for the reply Dawn.  I was told to take 1000IU so I'm not getting enough.  I did not know about the smooth tablets vs other tablets.  That's very interested and good to know.  I sure can't wait to be back to my old self.  I have NO energy and it's just a very sad feeling.

I think my nutritionist recommended 1000 IU also, but I when that didn't work, I doubled it.  I actually double everything that she says, since I don't have that much faith in her, but that's another story......

In this case, I am doing WAY more than double of what she says, and I can't remember where I originally read that closer to 5,000-10,000 IU per day was more like what we need as RNY patients.......

I hope you feel better soon..........

Christina,
I had extremely low Vit D count. The most importnat thing to know is,you MUST take Vit. D in a dry form, as we will not absorb the regular kind. I took 50,000 units a day for a month and that brought my levels to a normal count. Now I take 50,000 units 3-4 times a week and that seems ok, now that the sun is shining. I got my dry Vit D from vitalday. Try that and repeat your levels after a month or so.

My Vitamin D was low too (as was my Calcium!) so my endocrinologist (did I spell that right?!) prescribed a prescription strength Vit D and I've been feeling GREAT since taking them!

It's a really small pill called Calcitriol, I take .50 mg a day.  It actually HELPS increase the absorption of calcium.  You might want to call your doctor and see if he/she will let you try it out...

Here, I googled it for you...
