Does any one know of a Dr. that performs the VSG in Chicago, IL?  Your responses will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I'm not sure, what exactly is the VSG? I had the DS @ U of C.

I agree, your best bet would be to contact the University of Chicago hospitals.

Carmen, I am sure you have you reasons for only wanting the VSG, but most docs often say with a BMI over 50, a full DS (versus just the VSG) is the way to go, because of the malabsorption rate. I started with a BMI of 55.5 so I got the full DS and I am very happy with it so far.

I know Drs. Alverdy and Prachand do the VSG at U of C.

While Dr. John Rabkin is NOT in Chicago, he does come to Chicago monthly for the support group and check-ins with his patients. He does the VSG and the DS, in addition to liver transplants.

He did my DS in San Fran 5 months ago and things are going well, so far. I have lost 111 pounds, my labs are good and I feel great! If you'd like to learn more about Dr. Rabkin and the DS, you can come to the next info meeting/support group on August 18, from 6-8 p.m. at the Union League Club on Jackson in Chicago. Feel free to PM with any questions you have and please visit the DS forum on OH anytime to ask questions. Lots of people there have had just the VSG or the DS in two stages (VSG first) so people there have lots of experience to share.

Also, in a separate room at this support group meeting, from 6-7 p.m. is always an informational session to all who are considering WLS and the DS. *Please note that it is a "history of WLS" mini-lecture and is heavily slanted toward the VSG and DS, since Dr. Rabkin unapologetically refuses to do the RNY or Lap-Band anymore, citing ASMBS stats as to success rates and quality of life issues, so if your heart is set on getting a RNY or Lap-Band...it's probably not for you. (I always like to use this disclaimer anytime I talk about this support group meeting!)

All the best,

Nicolle

I had the kick-butt duodenal switch (DS)!
