less malabsorption

This is a quote I  read in another forum . (The longer out you get, the less malabsorption you have.  The body, being a miraculous thing, adapts to the new cir****tances and starts absorbing (a bit limited) once again. ) Does this apply to the lap band, and how does it affect your weight loss? Does it mean that after a couple of years you start gaining even on the limited amount of food we eat. I'm not banded yet but have been approved.

if your getting the band, there is no malabsorbtion from the get go.  so, this isn't a concern!  =)  that does apply to RNYs though.  the body is quite miraculous though, isn't it?  it will adapt to surgeries and the limitations that we put on it.  and gaining weight is really up to you.  if you eat right and excercise you should be able to maintain just fine.  just follow the rules and you'll be great!  hope this helps!!

The lap band doesn't cause malabsorption. The quote is probably for RNY folks. They do start to gain after a few years if they aren't very careful. Lap band folks can start again by adjusting the band.

Let me see if I can repeat what I wrote this morning. My router decided to go on the fritz this morning. This is mentioned on other forums. The malabsorbtion only applies to people that have the intestine rerouted. BUT this is not accurate. Your body does not adapt over the years and absorb more. I am not sure where some people get this from maybe doctors that are not fully versed in RNY, DS etc. I asked my doctor this and two NUTs also.  The band is strictly a restrictive device like the other posters mentioned. The weight gain is up to the person and how they use their tool. Of course there are mechanical issues that only a doctor is qualified to determine. You will be fine. Make the necessary life style changes and continue with them. Christine

although the malabsorption issue does not affect bandsters I have an RNY - and I wish the malabsorption would decrease.  it is not just calories that malabsorb, but nutrients as well. The nutritional malabsorption is not helping my bone density.  malabsorption or not, the bottom line is lifestyle as far as weight maintainence - No  surgery of any kind does it all for you.  The surgery gives you a helping hand, a chance to get the weight off, keeping it off is going to be up to you and how you rework your lifestyle to live healthy, eat healthy and be active.
