Hi!  My surgery is scheduled for June 3rd and I am worried about the shakes and my diabetes.  I take insulin and I am afraid I am going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO messed up these 2 weeks.  Has anyone else delt with the liquid diet and reducing their insulin?  Which shakes are best?  I live near a Walmart, are the ones there good?  Thanks for the help. There is saying that all protein sucks and some sucks less!  But after trying almost everything out there, I have found that the Vitaminshoppe's Bodytech Pro 24 vanilla is the best tasting.  It has 24 grams of protein to 1 gram of carbs.  I drink it in water and it is actually tasty.  The chocolate is okay in milk, but not as good in water.  It is one of the house brands, so it is cheaper than most.  There are Vitamin Shoppes all over or you can buy it at www.vitaminshoppe.com if you want to do it over the net.

For my pre-op diet we were told to use Atkins Advantage pre-made protein shakes. I tried the vanilla, strawberry, and they had 2 chocolate flavors. I prefered the light chocolate over the darker chocolate.(chocolate royale). They were not too bad tasting. I also tried EAS brand and didn't care that much for them.  I purchased them at Walmart. They costs 5.99 for a 4 pak.  We were also told that if we didn't like them we could get any others but they had to meet the following criteria: at least 15 gr of protein.....less than 10gr carbs....less than 4gr sugar....less than 4gr fat. I don't think they will upset your diabetes as they are low sugar and low carb. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.

Hi Kathleen! Protein is different for everyone. My liquid diet called for Slim-Fast pre-made shakes in a can OR Carnation Instant Breakfast--sugar free---no sibstitutions.  Since surgery, I started using the "Body by Fortress" that you can get at Wal-Mart and other places for about $14.00 per 2 lb. tub.  I found this to be fine--especially blended with stuff added in. The best thing to do, if you will be needing protein for after surgery (I am not familiar with VGB) is to go to vitalady.com and/or bariatriceating.com and order a bunch of samples.  That is how I found my favorite proteins.  I prefer the IDS Multi Pro Whey Isolates at the moment---but everyone is different. The shakes should not interfere with your diabetes, as your doctor knows about your diabetes and would not put you at risk.

Tell someone that you love them!

Hi Kathleen, I'm also diabetic and on insulin.  For my presurgery diet I used the low carb Slim Fast shakes.  They aren't bad and I still have one every now and again when I can use my majic bullet to mix up something. It takes pretty good.  I only like the chocolate though.  Walgreens has them on sale right now 2 paks for $11.  It's usually $6.79 a pak of 4. After surgery I tried a bunch but ended up with the low carb Isopure.  I like that the very best.  I also use a low carb milk from Hood's which helps by not raising my BSL. I'm sure you'll do just fine.  Feel free to PM me if you have more questions. There is also a Diabetes form here on OH that you might find helpful.  Don't know how active it is right now? I haven't been over there for a long time.
Regards and hugs,

Ronna
