Official De-Lurk/Upcoming Surgery
I've been lurking for the past 8 months and I have learned alot. I have just been notified that my appeal (after initial denial) has been apporoved and I now will have open RNY on 5/7/08. I'm a 35 year old male at my highest weight ever, 504 lbs. I never had any type of surgery and I'm pretty much scared stiff.
If anyone has anything to offer in regards of what I am to expect pre-op and post-op, please let me know. I know there is plenty of info around here that would answer most of these questions, but I haven't seen alot of input from male patients, or anyone as large as I am for that matter, So any info is greatly appreciated.
This is a great messageboard filled with great people and I'm happy to be here.
Thanks!
Welcome. Im not a male but I did weigh 404 before I had surgery. I also had the open. I would say the first three months are the hardest to get through. Everyone is different. Pre-op it was hard to do the liquid diet but well worth it. Post-op the strangest thing is not being hungry anymore. Just remembering to get the protein in and drink plenty of water. I just had my year surgiversary and I now weigh 200 pounds!!
I just wanted to say hi. There are so many great, supportive people here. I am new here too. I am really interested to know, if you dont mind, why were you denied ? Who is your insurance carrier ? I ask this because my info will be submitted in the next week or so and I am very nervous. Welcome and good luck with your surgery ! Amy
A plan without action is a dream... Action without a plan is a nightmare...

Hi Amy.
I was denied due to an oversight by the surgeons office, they jumped the gun and submitted my claim way before I was able to provide 5 yr history, 6 mo. supervised diet, psych exam, and sleep test. Therefore, Aetna automatically denied me right away stating i did not meet criteria. Needless to say, I was upset. A few months later everything was in order and sent over and I was then apporoved.
Welcome! I do not have any RNY experience to offer, as I am a DSer, but I wish you much success! You may want to post this on the RNY board. I'm sure there are lots of men who could share their experiences.
