Tips for taking powdered potassium?
Hello All,
I have to take powdered potassium and I have a really hard time getting it down. So hard that I haven't been taking it. However I now have low potassium (hypokalemia). I now have to take it twice a day for 3 days and get it retested on Monday. If I mix it with Crystal Light it takes me about 4 hours to get 12 oz down. The smell and the taste turns my stomach and I gag. Does anyone have any tips for getting it down easier? Maybe mixing with sugar free applesauce? Let me know. You'll be my life savers!
Daisydog,
I too am having a hard time getting my crushed meds down. I was trying unsweetened applesauce, but it seems to take so much applesauce to get it down that I get filled up fast. I started using yogurt. It is thicker and seems to hide the taste much better. Make sure it's sugar fee. I've never taken powdered potassium and am not sure how much you have to take. I just recommend something thick to coat it with and that goes down easy.
Hope this helps,
~Michelle
I can take my meds whole so I don't have that problem. However I can't use yogurt. I can't tolerate milk. I can do cheese however even the adkins shakes give me problems. The powder is a very small amount however it is very salty, bitter, and acrid tasting. I can get down about 3 ozs of food at a time so I might be able to do the applesauce. We will see I guess. Thanks for the tip though!
Hi! I use the pills that they prescribe but have to use a pill crusher b/c I cant swallow pills. I mix early sunrise sf drink in a medicine cup with the crushed patassium and take it like a shot. I have to refill the cup once or twice to get it all down. I will then follow it with a small cup of sf drink. so far that has been the best thing for me since everything else that we have tried has made me gag.
