Trouble Eating

My surgery date was Nov 5th.  I've lost 53 lbs.  I am having trouble eating more than 3 or 4 bites of food.  I get so full.  I cannot eat chicken or meat very well.  Feels like I've swallowed a shoe.  I hate protein drinks.  I mostly eat meat, cheese and nuts.  I can handle the nuts and I like them. I really wasn't prepared for this extremely limited no carb life.  I don't like it and to be honest I'm not sure that I agree with it.  I know that at 12 weeks postop my diet will be expanded, but if all I can eat is a couple bites, then how will I ever get to the other stuff besides protein.  The weight loss is nice.  The diet sucks. I promised myself that I would learn to live my life in moderation and always control portion size.  I never ate healthy prior to surgery.  I'm not sure if I'm buying it about the protein.  I know this sounds bad, but this is how I feel.  I don't even like meat.  I feel very dissatisfied about eating in general and sometimes I avoid eating because it is just too boring.   Does anyone have any suggestions for me?  Maybe it's the holidays, the weather, and the obsession with worry and inpatience over weight loss that has got me in such a funk.  I appreciate your suggestions.  Thanks Janet

Janet, It is quite normal to feel a little depressed about eating but you do have to remember that your protein intake is the most important thing next to vitamins. You are so new at this that it is real hard in the begining, Things will get easier. I still have a hard time with eating but then I remember how much better I feel now. I think I use to live to eat now I try to remember that I need to eat to live. A few more months down the line and it will get easier for you. Come to the boards often, I find them very helpfull Good luck in your journey Mike

I know its hard. I would say the first few months is the hardest. It is a huge adjustment but you will be able to expand your food choices soon. Protein is the most important. I cannot stand protein drinks either and still cannot. It makes me sick to think about them. I guess what helped was that my surgeon had my practice eating like I would have to after the surgery so it was not such a big shock

I hear you Janet!  I had trouble at the beginning too.  I hate to cook so I had to find things that worked with the new diet that I didn't have to fuss with.To be real hones, I drank most of my protein for the first 6 months, I used the Zero Carb Isopure in Alpine Punch that came in the premixed bottles and mixed it with Crystal Lite Lemonade and just sipped it all day long.  I would try and go through 2 bottles a day which gave me 80 grams of protein.I would eat things like, low fat cottage cheese, a small Wendy's Chili, sugar free pudding, tuna with low fat mayo, cheese omelets and sometimes broiled chicken but rarely. As time when on I was able to add fruit and veges to my diet and that helped with the variety.  But still after almost 2 years need to stay away from processed carbs as it messes with my blood sugar levels and also stalled my weight loss.It does help to focus on the weigh loss which is wonderful and then as time goes by on how good you will feel.It is definitely worth it in the end.  So don't give up and just keep plugging away.

Regards and hugs,

Ronna

Hello Janet, nice to see you post. I am having the same problem, I hate food too. but we need to eat and drink our protien, I have the whey protien bullet that I get from bariatric eating site and they have 42 grams of protien in each 3 ozs tube I just add to a 20oz bottle of water and they are very good, they are a little costly @ $30.00 for twelve tubes, Hope you feel better soon, and get over this funk,

Janet H...You look great in your picture, by the way.  Have you lost 74 lbs since 10/30?  I've lost 53 lbs since 11/04.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong?  Thanks for the great advice. Janet

No you are not doing anything wrong, I lost 15 lbs before surgery. Just make sure you get in your protien every day, I try for 80 grams, but do what you can,
