Constipation?

Did anyone have issues with this post surgery through early pureed foods? I have been 'backed up' for a while and only (rarely) passing 'marbles' since I have gone to pureed food.  (Dr. Kane's nurse approved me for pureed on Friday.) I usually was regular as clockwork before the surgery.  I am guessing it is because I am not having any fiber.  Should I take metamucil or something like it?

I have had the problem since surgery (and sometimes before). I take Benefiber.  It mixes tastelessly into my protein drinks morning and night.  You can mix it in anything.  I also take generic Colace stool softener (I'm up to 5 per day---2 in the morning and 3 at night).  The Generic is much cheaper---bu****ch to make sure it is just the softener----NOT a softener and laxative.  I also eat 4 prunes each night before bed.  If I don't get enough veggies/fruit on top of all of this, I still pass marbles sometimes. This is a very common side effect of the surgery.  It is still worth it to me.   As always, give your surgeon a call and see if the Benefiber and/or Colace is OK for you.  I was only doing the Colace after a while, but at my 1 year check up, the nutritionist said to go back to doing both.  You also have to MAKE SURE to get in all of your water----at LEAST 64 oz a day (I do an average of 100). I hope this helps...........

I struggled with the same issue post-op.  Had to take milk of magnesia a couple of time.  Now I take fiber choice wafers 4 of them every day and rarely have a problem.  Fiber Choice comes in a couple of sugar free varieties.  I like the strawberry best. I just take them with my Optisource vitimines, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. When I complained to Dr. Guskey that I was having problems and it was like trying to "pass rocks" he suggested the fiber tabs.
Regards and hugs,

Hi George, I still have issues due to not getting in enough water....I have to remember to sip, sip, sip all day otherwise I'm not a happy person, if ya know what I mean. I remember that the surgery itself and anesthesia will slow your system down, too. best wishes, Paula

George, I use Benefiber as well.  I take it once a day now and have no problems at all.  I throw it in my protein drink.  It has no taste at all and I have even mixed it into a glass of water.  Post Op, I had one experience with constipation, I needed to go, but did not take the time and then it was too late.  I was not able to go for 3 days and was set to go to the hospital because I was in such pain.  Since then Benefiber has been a daily routine and I am regular :-) As others have said, drinking water helps as well, but we post ops need a little extra help as well. Good luck!! Mary
