If anyone is interested ... Live Webcast Wednesday January 17, 2006 7:00 PM CST (January 18, 2007 at 01:00 UTC) Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, will be the first hospital in the Quad Cities region to host an Internet webcast of a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The Roux-en-Y procedure, which, according to the National Institutes of Health and the American Society for Bariatric Surgery is the most popular weight loss surgery in the United States, will be broadcast over the Internet at 7 p.m. CST, Wednesday, Jan. 17. View this on OR-Live.com Laparoscopic Weight-Loss Surgery Matthew C. Christophersen, M.D., FACS, Medical Director of the Genesis Center for Bariatric Surgery and a partner in the Davenport Surgical Group, will perform the procedure. He'll be assisted by Michael Phelps, M.D., Davenport Surgical Group. Teresa Fraker, Manager, Genesis Center for Bariatric Surgery, will serve as moderator for the webcast. The patient is 47-year-old Tamara Shipman, a nurse supervisor for Great River Home Health Care and Hospice in West Burlington, Iowa. The Roux-en-Y procedure reroutes a length of the small intestine to connect to a newly created stomach pouch. The rerouting bypasses a portion of the digestive system and promotes weight loss by limiting food intake and calorie absorption. The laparoscopic Roux-en-Y does not require opening the abdomen of the patient with a single, long incision. It is performed using five or six small incisions, called ports, of one inch or less in length on the abdomen. The surgeon's tools and the camera are inserted through the ports. "Recovery time, discomfort and surgical wound complications are significantly reduced, and patients can return to normal, daily activities much faster."
