Topic: WE ARE WORKING TO RESOLVE A GLITCH ON THE MB'S
I've seen alot of posts concerned w/ a wait message after posting. Some changes were being done to another forum and there's been a glitch since yesterday afternoon. IT is currently working on it and should have it resolved by the end of the day. Thanks to those who brought it to our attention. And thank you all for your patience. Have a great day.

Topic: Let's lend a hand: IVAN, etc.
If you're like me, you've spent a great deal of time sending positive thoughts and perhaps prayer to those who live in the path of the recent hurricanes and tornadoes that have been hammering the South over the past several weeks. Like me, you may also be thinking, "What can I do to help? How can I provide support to those in need?"
Well, AMOS folks are great at giving online support; we send words of greeting and encouragement to those who still have internet access or the means to communicate with us in some other way. But surely, for every person in those states *****aches out to us, there are many more behind them who are suffering in silence (at least to our ears and eyes).
What can we do? I am not sure, but I am willing to bet that my AMOS friends are asking themselves this very question. So, perhaps we can put our heads together and come up with a plan....
I'll contribute a few of my early-morning brainstorms. Please add to the list. But don't stop there; providing your ideas doesn't make them happen. Please get in touch with your local support groups, network with support leaders in states affected by the storm, and communicate with ObesityHelp your good ideas and plans. Let's put our heads and hands together, to provide support to our AMOS friends in need!
Ideas that we can put into action, individually or with others in our support groups and/or with AMOS friends from our own state:
-Gather together and provide scholarship money to send selected chapter or local support group leaders to the OH convention in CA next month;
-Bring needed supplies (toiletries, clothing, FRIENDSHIP) to distribute at the OH convention (or send directly) to those in the path of the storms;
-Send postings of support to the home pages of states whose members are affected by the recent devastations
Please don't let your support end at the compassion or idea stage. Lend a hand as well. Our strength is in our association and is evidenced by our individual actions.
May only warm and gentle winds blow your direction,
Melody

Topic: RE: :help:***PLZ HELP...MY DR. CONFUSED ME....RNY VS. LAP BAND****:help:
It's rather unfortunate that your surgeon showed such an unfair bias. LAP BAND has it's pros and cons. It takes much more willpower to expect to lose the same amount of weight as with a RNY. While it's true the surgery is less invasive, you will have a foriegn body in your abdomen. There is no malabsorption, so calories will be absorbed at a normal rate. I don't know your personal health history, but if you would like to ask me any further questions, feel free to email me. I work for a bariatric surgeon who offers both procedures, and I would be happy to help you out!

I HAD MY FIRST VISIT WITH THE WEIGHT LOSS SURGEON LAST WEEK. I CAME HOME IN TEARS....HE BASICALLY TOOK EVERYTHING I THOUGHT I KNEW ABOUT WLS AND TURNED IT AROUND. HE MORE THAN CONFUSED ME. I WAS OPTING FOR RNY BECAUSE I HAVE TAKEN PHENTERMINE A LOT BEFORE AND HAVE EATEN LESS FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME ONLY TO LOSE SMALL AMOUNTS OF WEIGHT MOSTLY. I THOUGHT THE RNY WAS MY TICKET DUE TO THE MALABSORBTION THAT RESULTS FROM IT. HE SAID THAT LAP BAND AND RNY ARE THE EXACT SAME AND YIELD THE EXACT SAME RESULTS. AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT TAKES TO LOSE WEIGHT. THEN HE PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT LAP WILL TAKE A LITTLE LONGER TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF BUT AT LEAST MY "BONES WILL NOT BE CRACKING AND BREAKING AT 50 YRS OLD" & " MY HAIR TO FALL OUT". AND THAT I HAD MISINFORMATION FROM "WEBSITES" THAT CAUSED ME TO THINK RNY WAS BETTER. HE ALSO SAID HE'D BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE ME THE "MORE DANGEROUS" SURGERY IF THAT IS WHAT I REALLY WANTED. ONLY TO FINISH THE CONVERSATION WITH "OH YOU HAVE CIGNA AND THEY WILL ONLY PAY FOR RNY......THEN HE SAID I MUST NEED MORE TIME TO "MAKE UP MY MIND" AND PUT EVERYTHING ON HOLD. I HAD MY MIND MADE UP WHEN I WENT IN.........NOW I AM A MESS. I AM HAVING NIGHTMARES AND I HAVE 4 KIDS TO THINK ABOUT. I AM NOW FILLED WITH DOUBT...WHY WOULD ANYONE GET A SURGERY THAT CAN KILL THEM IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE IF THERE IS ANOTHER SURGERY THAT IS THE SAME ...ONLY BEING LESS DANGEROUS? I REALLY WANTED THE RNY. NOW WHAT? PLEASE HELP... THANKS......

Topic: Another Question
Hi again:
Is it a good idea to write a letter to your insurance company to help with approval for the surgery? If so, does anyone have a sample of a letter I could write?
Any assistance is really appreciated.

Topic: Sleep Study?
Hi:
Quick question on a sleep study. If I had a pulse oximtery test that indicates that I have sleep apnea. I have not had a sleep study done as it financially expensive for me. How much emphasis does the insurance place on the actual sleep study? Would my pulse oximeter test be enough? I would be crushed if I could not get approved for this surgery. Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.
