Congrats on your approval! I know you've been waiting a long time. My preop was really non eventful. I just had to go to St. Lukes and be interviewed by a nurse and they take your vitals, and get your medicine and allergy history. I think they may have done a blood draw too, but I didn't have to do any additional testing (but I also didn't have any serious co morbidities either). You'll likely be in the hospital for 2 nights, and then get released on the 3rd afternoon. You'll stay in bed the first night. They'll get you up to walk on the 2nd day and they'll want you to walk at least 5 times per day. You'll also start sipping water on the 2nd day. You may have some gas trapped in your abdomen that can travel to your shoulder and it'll hurt some. The RNY part of the surgery isn't really painful at all. I was totally off of pain meds in 72 hours. Dr. Oakley is a great surgeon and you're in good hands.

Oh I wish my day was here. As the days go by it seems like it is never going to get here. I have a huge list of questions to ask my Dr. and my nutritionist . I want to start buying vitamins and supplements to try and make the cost not so hard over the summer months while I will not be working, but have no idea what they are going to recommend. I have my grandmother and mother telling me that I need to take tums and children's vitamins and other forums telling no that isn't right. i am also nervous about leaving my girls for 2 nights and I haven't told my friends. Everyone believes I am going out of town for a few days. I hate not telling them but they aren't supportive of this decision. I am paying for my procedure and had ask a family member for help and he told em that I wasn't "that fat" and I needed to wait until I really need it. another family member has offered instead of helping pay the costs for this I should just diet again and try on my own again and I they will buy me a new car. I thought I had a great support behind me but as it gets closer to the date I just want to get in and get out without anybody knowing what I am doing. Did anybody else experience family members and Friends stop thinking that this is a wonderful thing and what you to try again?

YEAH!
You will love the new you. The first 5 weeks are a little rough. After that you learn to listen to your body and it gets so much easier. Just remember to walk and sip. And farting is totally OK after this proceedure. In fact for a few weeks or months it will be a way of life.
It's a work in progress but also a wonderful journey.

Topic: RE: Hey, Dr. Oakley's patients
Thanks to all of you for your posts. I was at the hospital about 2 1/2 days. Everything went very smoothly. I agree with you on your opinion of Dr. Oakley, he is a wonderful surgeon. He always answered my questions and was very supportive. St. Luke's Hospital and staff were just great as well. I really appreciated all of the follow-up information in writing that I received at check-out time. The visit from Judy, the RD, was very helpful as well. Now that I am home I can concentrate on getting all my fluid, vitamins, and protein. Thanks again for your information.

2nd day after surgery you will drink three dixie cups of water. If that stays down then you will have 24 hours of a a clear bariatric liquid diet.
When you leave the hospital you will be on full liquids.. I did the full liquids for about a week and a half and then advanced to puree.. Depending on how you are doing at your 2 week follow up will determine how Dr. Oakley will allow you to advance.
Be sure to take your vitamins, that is a big deal.. follow the doctors orders and tow the line.. he is an exceptional surgeon and knows what he is doing. Start your protein shakes now because you will be drinking a lot of them for the first 2 weeks... Good luck on your surgery!
