Topic: I'm new and I have a TON of questions....please help!
I am new to trying to learn about WLS. I am on title xix (full time student and single mom). I tried to talk to my doctor about it over a year ago, and at the time i was having an episode of high blood pressure, but when that went away on my own they said there wasnt much they could do. Now, I have been seeing a specialist since september of '08 for severe reflux, and had several upper GI scopes done, concluding in "it's probably because you need to lose weight, we really cant find any other reason for the inflammation". I am also seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis for lower back pain due to my weight, and was told by another doctor that my intermittent knee pain was due to my weight.
I was wondering if anyone else in iowa on title xix has had this surgery done and what exactly I should do to get this started. Is it even possible to get this approved through them? And are there any surgeons in the lemars/sioux city area that accept title xix for this?
Any help would be great.
thanks so much

Hi Carol,

Congratulations on your 'textbook' recovery!!  It sounds like you are doing great!  I was wondering if you had any weight related medical conditions before the surgery, and if so, are they improving?  The reason, I am asking is because that is why I am looking into this surgery, so I would like to hear of anyone's experience with this (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, anything like that).
Again, congratulations!! You make it sound so easy.

Yeah Cheryl!!!!  I will have your spot on the "loser's bench" ready for you when you get out of the operating room.  :-)

Like Jenn said, don't worry about the liquid diet..............keep the end goal in mind.  You can do this and I believe you will do this.  Keep posting update so we know what's happening with you.

Please let us know as soon as you know! :)  Dont be nervous about the liquid diet, I had never done one before either, but its not as hard as you think.  Just think about the big picture!! Finally, both the insurance company and Dr office called me today!!! It really only took the insurance company a few weeks total and during that time they got a few additional things, from Dr office whom replied quickly to them!!! Mary will call me tomorrow with my pre-op testing appointments and I am on my WAY!!!! now I am getting nervous about the pre-diet.  I have never been on a liquid diet before, but if I go into prepared I know I will survive..
Thanks for listening!!

Topic: Bragging Again!
Here I am nine weeks post-surgery, 58 pounds lighter (since October, 2008 when I started this journey), 41 inches less and feeling great.  I am eating the general diet now and so far so good.  I am still a little uneasy about raw veggies because I am afraid something will get stuck.  Just seems that raw veggies can't be chewed to mush as easily as cooked green beans can.

A friend of mine is starting this journey and she is so excited about it.  I remember totally how excited I was to get Chris' email about a consultation appointment.  Oh gosh that was a terrific day!  With each step along the way.................consultation day, eating healthy to prep for surgery, lab work to get ready for surgery, insurance approval letter, etc.  It has been a wonderful journey that I am on and I love it.  I would not change anything about this.  Plus, I can't say enough positive things about the care I have been given at UIHC by Dr. Jamal and the staff there.  All of them are wonderful and very helpful, not to mention experts in bariatric surgery and the way of life you need to follow after surgery.  They are the best!

Thanks for checking in on me and listening to me brag again.

Would love to hear from all of you how you are doing and how things are going for you.  Don't get so busy that you don't take time to post on her!

Topic: RE: So...I'm 5 months out today...
Hey Michelle!

Congrats on five months, 54 pounds and 41 inches.  That is awesome and I hope that I do that well when I am that far out.

It really helped me to hear you say you would go two weeks without losing anything and that you wouldn't get worked up over it.  I think the scale is slowing down for me and I was feeling bad because I had been losing quite quickly the first few weeks.  I am not going to get excited about the slow weight loss because it's still loss.  :-)

Is the beef jerky a particular brand of it, or just whatever the store stocks?  I looked at some and it was so high in sodium that I didn't think it would be good for me.  I'll have to check at the Dollar Tree and Dollar General and see what they have.  Thanks for the tip.

Great for you running.  I have never been able to do that because it's just so hard to breath when I run.  Now, give me walking and I can do that all day long.  Good luck in your 10K in October.  You'll do just fine since you are training now.

Don't apologize for rambling.  I love rambling people and do it myself quite often (in case no one noticed it before).  :-)

Hope that things continue to go well for you and keep posting.  Hope that B-12 issue gets resolved soon.........very soon!

Carol
