Topic: Hello, my Iowa Family :)

Greetings!

I'm Gem & I came by to say HELLO to all.   I've never been to Iowa, so I have no friends there.  Came by to meet some friends & give a brief introduction.

Anyways, I'm 61 months post op - over 100% of my excess body weight was lost by 18 months out and it stays off (I've even tried to regain a few pounds LOL).   I started at 267 pounds and have weighed 116 for the past year or so.   I think that is where I'll stay.  I'm now considering plastics...my surgeon suggested implants but I'm not looking for implants, just a lift...after years of having big floppies that jiggled & bursted out of clothing when they weren't suppposed to, I really like my itty bitties that only move when they are supposed to.  As for my PREop comorbidities, I had arthritis and highblood pressure.  Both of which I still have although my weight is has definitely been eliminated as a factor in aggravating either.   After WLS, I was put through MANY, MANY, MANY tests to deterimine why at around 130 pounds at that time, my blodd pressure would not stay in check.  Results indicated because they weren't treating the CAUSE of it...only the symptom.  The cause - well, my chronic high blood pressure was found to be a congenital defect stemming from a steroid imbalance.   Once they started to treat "steriod imbalance", my blood pressure readily cooperated.  Point in saying all of that?  Before WLS, only the physician who said I needed WLS to eliminated my weight as a factor so specialist wouldn't have it as a diagnosis crutch had suggested my blood pressure was something far deeper than typical diagnosis.   Before her, every single physician I'd ever gone to said my blood pressures hovered around the 190/160 range because I was over weight.  NO ONE looked for any other cause.  NO ONE.  So in summary, whatever they're telling you "if you loose weight your ____ will go away", sometimes they are trying to get you out of their office without doing real work.

Anyways, that's me in a nutshell!!  My contact info is on my profile, please feel free to use it.  I decided that I would spend a few days floating around OH (FOR A CHANGE) greeting family on OH - & WLS family will always be my family.   Although, I know once I close this browser, it will be months before I log back in so with that I ask that you please feel free to come by and say hi :)

Topic: Chicago OH Event
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Chicago event at the last minute and I am wondering what those of you who went thought of it.  I've heard from a couple people and wondered if others would mind posting their thoughts about the event.

Thanks!

Topic: RE: Anyone with Wellmark BCBS of Iowa?

VSG in currently not "covered" under my BCBS wellmark policy as it is considered investigational. However there are people on the VSG boards with other insurers who were in the same situation with it being considered investigational and they still got the VSG covered after appeals. Just to let you guys know that it is possible to fight for something else other than just the RNY or the band. At first I thought those would be my only options too but I've talked to people here who've had either the VSG and the DS approved when it was still considered investiagational for them too.

I just wanted to let you know because I never knew that fighting was even an option until recently. So if you really want something other than the RNY or the band please fight for it. The worst they can say is no. You can also get professional help with the appeals too.

I'm just so hoping to hear from some one whose actually accomplished this with Wellmart BCBS.

Topic: Where do you buy your protein powder?
I live in Northern Iowa and am looking for somewhere that carries matrix protein powder.    does anyone know where they carry it?   It is out of stock on several of my favorite websites.

I also have wellmark bc/bs of Iowa.   I had rny as my plan did not cover anything but the band or rny.    I had some trouble getting approved (denied first time), but then got approval.

Topic: RE: Genesis in Davenport?
I'm working with Genesis for RNY, so I can't personally say how they are with sleeve patients. I know they actually have a recorded sleeve surgery (as well as an RNY) on their website that you can watch! Even if you're squeamish about that sort of thing, it's really worth watching because you learn so much. The staff at Genesis has been wonderful to work with. If you haven't already, give them a call! They are great about answering any questions you might have!

I have Wellmark BCBS of Iowa.    When I checked VSG was not covered... just band or bypass, but I realize they have mutliple plans and employers can choose options.   I chose bypass through Mercy in Des Moines.     I was approved on the first try.
