Topic: RE: Dr. Glas**** and his Staff! What's up with them?
I think you should talk with Dr. G's team or Dr. G. himself and see why he won't do the surgery you want. There must be a good reason he won't do the RNY on you and I think you have the right to know why. He is pretty knowledgeable from what I hear of him, so I'm thinking he is looking out for your health. The next step you could take is checking at other facilities that do bariatric surgery. If they all tell you the same thing that Dr. G. is telling you, then you may have to accept the fact that RNY isn't right for you at this time. Personally, I checked out four places before I settled on UIHC for my surgery.
Remain calm and take your time to check this out thoroughly because it's something you only want to do once in your life.
Good luck and let us know how things go for you.

Topic: Dr. Glas**** and his Staff! What's up with them?
I take meds for depression and Dr. Glas**** in Cedar Falls refuses to do the rouxny which is the surgery I want. He'll only do the lapband despite a letter from my psych doctor stating I'd be fine!!!! I have already paid $100 of the $200 consult fee which is not refundable! I am livid at this!!!! What should I do!? The staff acts rude and short and wouldn't even let me talk to the Dr. again or people who had been successful there with the lapband. I am at wit's end with these people!!!! Any advice!??

I don't know anything about your surgeon, but I know a majority of surgeons are very leary about taking on patients to do revisions. Many flat out just won't do it!
I have to ask this question: When you had the surgery done initially did you follow the diet and exercise plan laid out by your physician?

I agree with everything everyone else said! I went to Dr. Eibes's office--although Dr. LaMasters did my surgery as I wanted it done laparoscopically and Dr. Eibes will only do the open procedure with the RNY. Their information seminar is excellent and gives you a much better (and realistic) idea of what to expect.
I had my surgery done 9 months ago and I am down 111 pounds (and holding!). Good luck!

Topic: Anyone going to the Dallas OH event?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone from Iowa was planning to go to the OH event in Dallas in September.
Topic: Six Months Post Surgery and Looking Pretty Cool!
I haven't posted in quite some time on here but have been reading others' comments. I thought it would be good to post my latest update on here because many of you have been along with me on my journey.
I am officially six months post surgery as of August 11th. On Feb. 11th, 2009, I had RNY surgery at UIHC in Iowa City with Dr. Jamal. I have had the best experience there and would highly............no HIGHLY..........recommend that you check them out if you are even remotely interested in having the surgery with a team of professionals who have nothing but your health and weight loss success as their goal.
I had my yearly physical with my PCP today and I have lost exactly 80 pounds since last year at this time. I am elated beyond belief! My PCP had his nurse call me after I got home and tell me again how proud he was of my efforts to improve my health and lose the weight. He told me several times when I was in his office how proud he was, but when his nurse called me after I got home, that really made me feel terrific. It has been a journey and I am looking forward to continuing on the journey for the rest of my life. It is my goal to lose another 10-15 pounds and I know I will get there by following the directions of my surgical team at UIHC.
As many of you know, I belong to Curves fitness center and went there today as well. It was time to be measured and weighed and I was ready. The last time I was measured there was on April 7th so just two months post surgery. At that time, I had been on my journey for six months (since Oct., 2008) and lost a total of 35 inches at that point. Today when I was measured, I added another 17 inches lost for a grand total of 52 inches. It is just amazing how fast the inches and pounds fell off my body and I could not be more thrilled at the outcome of my surgery.
This isn't a quick fix or an easy thing to do, but with the tool of RNY I am finally winning the battle of excess weight and all the additional problems that accompany it. I hope that anyone considering surgery takes time to research and check out the surgical teams out there. I went to many seminars and talked with many surgical teams before settling on UIHC.
As I have said many times before, if you have questions or want to get in touch with me about my experience (and that's all I can talk about because mine is all I have the knowledge about), please do so.
Hope that you are doing well and learning from this forum.

Topic: RE: New to the Iowa Forum
I am from Vinton and I have been researching for the last few years the lap-band procedure and just recently came across this website. I do not have insurance so I am wondering if anyone here has paid out of pocket or loan for the procedure and if they could tell me roughly what it was. I am 23, 350 lbs, I have one son and am to the point I have a hard time walking up a single flight of stairs. I do not know how I am going to be able to pay for this but I have been dieting and everything for 5 years and now I do not know what to do. Any advice??
I'm from Iowa originally and I decided to check out this forum. ;o)
If you are self pay please think long and hard about a band. The initial cost is not the only cost you will have. Many studies are showing you will need a 2nd surgery about 30% of the time within the first 5 years to correct a slip, erosion, flipped port, kinked tubing, leaks, etc. I could never suggest the band for self pay.
I would seriously look at a sleeve. The weight loss is better than banding, the long term risks and complications are MUCH less than that of a band, there is no maintenance whatsoever, and it's a much easier journey long term.
If you are self pay consider Mexico. It's about half the price for 3x the hospitalization time.

Topic: RE: Any DS'ers?
From what I know of there aren't many DS'ers in Iowa. Is your surgeon in IA? I have not heard of a surgery doing the DS other than at Mayo (rochester, MN) as the closest to us.
Congratulations on your surgery, you must be excited. Aetna is my insurance and can be a stickler, so good for you for winning that battle!!!

I am going to be seeing Dr Jamal @ UIHC. My surgeon isn't following me and told me to just follow up with my PCP, well that is not how it is suppose to be done and she in turn referred my to the U for treatment from now on. I see them 8-28 and am looking forward to getting the proper follow up care. From the sound of the nurse I spoke to already, there are things that they do that are completely different.

Is this your surgeon? I work at a hospital, and I have had concerns regarding seeing another Dr. But that just may be my best bet. Thanks.
