Topic: New show on The Learning Channel

For all of you that have cable tv and get The Learning Channel, Starting on Monday of next week they will begin broadcasting a new show called Big Medicine. I'm looking forward to this and I'm hoping to glean more information and help out of it also. It will be on Monday evening sometime. I look forward to watching it and seeing what goes on.

Topic: RE: anemia

Rhonda, Anemia is very common in WLS patients. I was recently diagnoised with severe anemia and was put on 325 mg of iron 3xs a day. Since my stores were extremely low my Dr. had me do a stool test and that came back with blood in them, so I was losing blood as well. I had an endoscopy done last week and found out that I have a bleeding ulcer at the astomosis on my pouch, which is very common with WLS patients as well. Please take your Drs. advice and do what she is telling you to do. Also have the GI dr. check things out as well and make sure everything is ok. I will have to take this iron for this rest of my life. Stephanie

Dear Rhonda, I know anemia can be a problem for wls patients, but other than that, don't know a thing! Good luck with getting this under control. It sounds like you have some good doctors working on the problem. Best with everything, Sally

Topic: RE: Mercy Medical Hopeful
Dear Jennifer, I had the rny at Mercy but under private insurance. Have you spoken with the Mercy Bariatric Program coordinator? She might be able to give you more information. There is a woman who attends the support group who is working on doing the lap band with Medicad. She attends the local support group but will have the surgery elsewhere. I had the rny with Dr. Rizk and have had great results. Good luck, Sally

Topic: anemia
I am over 2 years out from surgery and am doing great except for one thing. I am anemic. They have tried doubling my dosage, taking two dosages at different times during the day, taking it with orange juice (or something acidic to help it absorb), they did a procedure to lesson my heavy periods, and now they are sending me to a GI Dr to check for colon cancer as anemia is a symptom of colon cancer and it happens to have occurred on my Dad's side of the family. I am kind of worked up about it but don't really feel like I have cancer. I go to the GI Dr for a consult today. My ankles and legs have been swelling up which is why I went to the Dr in the first place and she told me that is a symptom of anemia after ruling out most other causes of swelling. Anyway, I am writing to see how common it is for patients of our surgery to battle with anemia still after 2+ years. Any advice? Thanks, Rhonda

Janie Thank you so much for your reply. I was given 2 names of people over the weekend to call and talk to them about their experiances. I guess one lady that had the surgery, not sure if was the band or the bypass, but she had ALOT of problems with hers. I am not sure if she was taking care of herself or not. I havent gotten a chance to call her back yet. I will do that this week sometime. Thanks again for your post. I am going to schedual my Consult soon, they just got my paperwork back a few days ago. Ill let you know my progress. Congrats on the weight loss too. Soon i will be where you are! Dawn

Hi Dawn -- I don't get on the boards much any more, but just ran across your post. I'm not sure why you would be hearing negative comments on gastric bypass.... I can only tell you good things. Also, Dr. Glas****'s office is great. I'm three years out and have had basically no problems. Stick to the rules and also exercise.... I initially lost 135 lbs (starting 272 - got down to 135) and now 3 yrs out I've gained about 30 lbs, but this is a much better weight for me. I'm in a very comfortable size 12 - oh yeh and I'm 47 y/o. I do work out for an hour to hour and a half 5 days a week -- the exercise is a very important part of all of this process. This is a life change.... yeh you will lose the weight without trying for a long while, but then you have to work to keep it off... just make sure you're ready for the long-term also. Best of luck to you... Janie
