Topic: RE: Answer to my hypoglycemia

Lyn, I am so glad that you found out what is going on there. How do they check for this? Is it a blood test? Please let me know as I would like to have my dr. check on that as well. I have episodes off and on with my sugars getting low. What were your symptoms? I hope that you have a sucessful surgery and that everything goes well. I will keep you in my prayers. Please post after surgery and let us know how you are doing. If there is anything you need please let me know.  Take care, Stephanie

Topic: Answer to my hypoglycemia
I finally have an answer to my hypoglycemia.  I have increased beta cell mass in the tail of my pancreas.  That part of my pancreas secretes 5x the amount of insulin it should.  No wonder I'm having problems.   So in 3 weeks, I'm having part of my pancreas removed at Mayo Clinic.  The good news is that the rest of the pancreas seems to be behaving itself.  The bad news is that because it's the tail, the spleen must go also.  They use the same artery.  Plus the way my surgeon did my RNY is the least favorable route for the roux limb so it makes the surgery harder.  The surgeon at Mayo who is doing this has also had gastric bypass.  He said they are now following 50 patients with this and that may just be the tip of the iceberg.  He says most run of the mill WLS docs don't yet recognize this as a gastric bypass complication and almost none of the PCPs will.  So, be proactive and if you are having prolbems with hypoglycemia, be sure to have it researched.  It can lead to seizures.   I just want my life back and be able to eat "normally", whatever that is for a WLS patient.  I'm to the point where I can't eat any carbs without my sugar dropping drastically.  Yesterday I dropped to 40.  Not good.  If I eat only protein, I get foggy from lack of carbs.  If I eat some carbs, I get foggy because my sugar is whacko.  Can't win.  And I don't like this danged foggy feeling.  Not good when trying to research accounting problems.   Lyn 262/162/142  Never made it to goal but hoping to once this is resolved!

My pre op is set for a week from today!  I already took the H pylori 2 weeks ago and it was negative. They said I don't have to take it again. Yeah.  See you Saturday Lea Ann

I considered Dr. Hardy (lived in Ames) but decided to have a different type surgery (Lap MGB, reversible) than what Dr. Hardy does. (guess I'm not much help for you with your questions) Anyway, all that was back in 2002, so I haven't kept up on WLS things for Ames (moved away from there 2005).  I'm well into the PS stuff now days, lol. Saw the IA City Group of PS for LBL consult (2003). Their quote was $12,000 and my insurance co. said "no", lol. (imagine that) Anyway, I hear today that those same doctors get's $18,000 for the LBL. I'm bragging a bit because I got mine (LBL) for $2,400, yikes. Okay, done with the "me, me, me" storys. Peggy in B.P. IA 43 Procedures-Brazil

Congrats Dawn! My husband is going through there for his lap band. He got hung up with the Psych Eval so he has to take six weeks of stress management! I am very happy for you. Its sad but true that this board has slowed wayyyyy down. Make sure to check out the lap band board! Much Luck Amanda

Topic: RE: New show on The Learning Channel

Hi Dawn; Its about weight loss surgery, plastic surgery, and morbidly and super morbidly obese patients. It is very good. Its on every Monday night now. Its on TLC aka The Learning Channel. It is very good and its heartbreaking to see what some of the patients go through and see this as their last choice option. Next week they are supposed to be doing surgery on a man named Allan. He was 686 lbs when they admitted him to the hospital. In next weeks show he will be down to 620 from an all time high of 840-850. Poor guy was pampered by his mama all his life and mama overindulged him. Now mama don't know what to think about him having the surgery and is heartbroken and afraid.

Let the words of my mouth and meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, oh Lord my strength and my redeemer.

I am really excited today. I was approved for the lap band instead of the RNY.  Will any of you be at the Des Moines Bariatric Support Group this Saturday?
