Topic: RE: For those who have had the surgery...

Before I had my surgrey 3+ yrs ago, I briefly looked at the memorial page and decided that only God knew when it was my time to go.  I knew that my life would never get better (and probably get worse) if I didn't take the drastic step of having gastric bypass surgery. Dr. G and is staff are very good and have a very thorough program.  Put your faith into their (and God's) hands.  I can say this is absolutely the best thing I've done for myself.  Well let me rephrase that -- since my surgery I also feel that being able to exercise every day (and looking forward to it) is also one of the best things I can do for myself.....  I feel like a new person.   Keep a positive outlook, but make decisions on how YOU feel and not what others "think" you should do..  Life is good..... better than I ever thought it could be. Ok, so I typed this long post, then lost it. SHEESH!  Anyway, I'm going to the July 13 meeting, which may be the same as you. I want it to get here now!! Once you decide something like this, you've done your reading, research, thinking, then it takes forever to do anything! lol  I'm starting a doctor-supv'd diet now just in case. I have a month that I can go ahead and be started just in case, though my PCP thinks I have enough history plus HBP to be approved as is. We'll see. Anyone else worried about all the pre-approval? Did you see that lady, Rose, on Big Medicine this week get denied by the psych eval? I'm no where near like she is emotionally, but still. My friend who had the bypass a few years ago said I shouldn't have a problem, that my glasses have never been rose-colored about anything, LOL, and that's what they don't want to see, someone who thinks this is just one big solution to weight problem.

Thank you so much! :-) I am very confident in my surgeon and the staff.  I was looking at having this done a few years back and was not nearly as comfortable with the surgeon as I am with Dr. G. Again, thank you so much for the post! :-)

I was terrified before my surgery.  My husband and I both had a good cry the night before.  As I was being wheeled in for surgery, I was even crying.  I had seen all the horror stories, watched all the bad shows about this surgery on t.v. and had just gotten my self really worked up and big time scared.   As I was going off to sleep on the table, my doctor (Dr. Sundburg) reassured me I would be fine, and low and behold I was.  I woke up feeling better than I did when I had my 2 children, (they were delivered surgically), and better than the stomach hernia surgery I had the year prior.  I had my RNY done lap and it was such a breeze. I have been out now 1 1/2 years, down 165 lbs., and have had absolutely no complications at all.  Wish I wouldn't had been so scared many years prior.  One good word of advice, don't listen to the media, they will only bring you the worst so they can get onlookers and readers.  If they were to tell of the majority of people that had no problems, then the story wouldn't be as interesting. Hang in there, calm those fears, and look to a year from now when you will be celebrating in a new you!!!!! Good luck  Cathy J.

Did Dr Eibes suggest wish surgery he thought would be the best for you? I'm still debating on which one to go with.

I'm in the same positon you are, deciding between Mercy and Dr Eibes. I have went to the Mercy meeting and cant get into Dr Eibes meetings until the middle of July. I just want to get the ball rolling also. I hope the approval goes fast but I dont want to rush things either. Its a trying time waiting!!!!

Actually there IS a difference between DO's and MD's.  DO's have MORE training because they get training on osteopathic manipulative medicine or - adjustments to your bones which often times leads to less medications, pains that go away and in general you are healthier when your spine is in line.  But as far as medical education, it is basically the same.  How do I know?  I have worked at the osteopathic collge in Des Moines for 18 years.  ANYONE should look for a board certified physician.  There are just different boards for MD's and DO's they are just goverend by different bodies of Medical Professionals.  Its a good idea to check out ANY physician whehter it be a DO or a MD.  There are good and bad in all fields.  Check out where your physician went to school, check to see if they have any cases pending against them, check to see how long and how many surgeries they have done.  I even asked mine his mortality rate..>AND do what you did here....ASK, ask, ask.   Hope it all goes well!
