Janet ~~ it is so good to see you again....  I come back and read the boards occasionlly, but for the most part I just "lurk"  LOL  Life is busy for me these days also... and I too have gained but I'm back on the losing train now.  I upped my workouts to 5 to 6 times a week and am trying REALLY hard to get back...   My tummy seems to be shrinking back down where it belongs and as long as I stay away from sugar I've becoming a lot less tolerant of it again.... and that's a GOOD thing!!!   You know if we can't get Carnie back to Davenport, maybe we should all just plan a weekend over there......do you think all of girls could be trusted together.... one giant slumber party... WWOOOO HOOO...   Life is good here too...... glad to hear from you... Janie

Topic: Grinnell Hospital
Okay I have been working with Grinnell hospital since December to have my surgery Dr. Kermode) and I am having the hardest time getting approved with my insurance (midlans aetna.)  Is it just me or is this medical program(surgical associates) not the greatest at working with insurance companies?  Please let me know if you have had the same problems or if there is somewhere else for me to try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks! Topic: Hello All Been Awhile
How is everyone doing, I hope good! Things are going ok for me, been really busy with work and getting my daughter ready for college this Fall. I transferred to days in Jan. thankgoodness cus the night shift was kicking my butt! I have gained about 15-20lbs since my lowest weight but feel great other than I still have my "fat" days and it drives me crazy!!!! If I would exercise, eat right, etc. I know I could lose what I have gained but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez thats too easy eh! I still have my ole pouch reminding me that it is there, for example ppl do NOT stop taking your antacids as I did and my stomach got so inflamed I was put in the hospital with terriable pains! My Dr. said he has never seen anything look so bad, and trust me it hurt really bad also!!! So remember this is for life take those antacids! I rarely throw up anymore (I know tmi) but trully it was really getting out of control! Like I said earlier my pouch still reminds me that it is there and working, I sneeze when I am full, I have my good wks. when I can eat good and than I have my wks. when I hardly eat at all. I have really slacked on drinking water and know that would really help alot, so shame on me! Anyway life is good and I hope everyone else is happy and healthy as well.....MISS YOU ALL!!! SO LADIES WHEN IS CARNIE GONNA BE IN DAVENPORT AGAIN I'M READY!!!!

Take care,
Janet

Hi Carol, I am having my RNY surgery done in Arlington Heights, IL by Dr. Kane Jr.  His practice has a center of exellence rating.  Which you are probably aware, we ( medicare patients)  have to go to a center of excellence!  Dr Kane Jr.'s father wrote a lot of the bariatric procedures.  Mercy Capitol Bariatrics department actually trained with the Kane Center in Arlington Heights, IL.  I would highly recommend him and any of his partners...they are all great doctors.  Check out the Illinois forum.  I will send you the website address of all of the SS approved site listings.  Check out my profile... Topic: Just popping in to say HI
Hey guys, I haven't been in the Iowa forum for a long, long time. Just wanted to pop in and say HI. It has been 2 1/2 years since my RNY at Mercy Capitol. I always wondered if I would come to a place in time where my surgery would not be on my mind all the time anymore. I am finally at that point. I guess that's why I am never on the OH forums anymore. It seems like once I had my plastics, and got well again, I just moved on with my life and didn't need so much help and support anymore. I don't even remember if my picture that is going to show up with this posting is recent enough to give a good look at how I appear now. If not, you can check out my money-saving blog to see a more recent pic. of me if you like: http://showmethemoneyhoney.blogspot.com/ Anyway.....OK, I had the bypass 12/04. Then I had a tummy tuck last October (9/06), then I had an emergency bowel obstruction four weeks later in 10/06, and finally, about 7 weeks ago Dr. Smolik did a HUGE repair on my abdominal hernia. He went in laproscopic (I didn't know they could do that!) and put mesh across my entire abdomen to make sure this NEVER happens to me again. The hernia wasn't really bothering me, but I exercise a lot and I was worried it may some day become a problem and after that bowel obstruction, I was not taking any chances of getting into any kind of emergency situations again. When Dr. Smolik got in there, he confirmed that if he just did a little patch job on the one hernia, that I'd definitely be back eventually for more. With this big fix, he cured the whole thing and there is less than 6% chance of getting another hernia. I really like Smolik. I think he is an excellent doctor. He has done all of my surgeries (except the TT). So, my life is finally getting somewhat back to normal. I am back to exercising again, and eating pretty much OK again. My weight has been stable at around 132 for a long long time now, so no threat of regaining. I watch what I eat and I am grateful to God that my "shut off valve" works perfectly. I have no trouble with overeating. I think another thing that helps me remain succesful is having an active lifestyle. I try to get as much exercise in as I can. Not because I *have to*, but because I want to. It feels good and right to move my body. In the winter, I take a lot of step aerobics classes at the Y and do treadmill. In the summer, it is easy to bike ride, walk outdoors, etc. It doesn't have to be boring. I take my vitamins religiously. I made this commitment to a new healthy life, and when I did that, I made the commitment 100%. Not just partly. And not just until I got the weight off. I decided I was in this forever. SO, I take Vista Vitamins twice a day. They are formulated for bariatric surgery patients, with malabsorption issues. Yes, they are expensive, about a dollar a day, but aren't I worth it?  I also take Femiron, and b complex. I also take 1500 mgs of calcium every day split up in three doses. I don't feel that any of this is too hard to maintain. It's just part of the healthy living plan. I want to feel the best I can all the time. I had this surgery in the first place to be healthy and live a long time, so I want to do everything I can to make sure it stays that way. So, don't even think about slacking off on your vitamins and protein. I was at least 1 1/2 years out before I could stop using protein. Now, I can eat all the protein I need to be healthy. I hope you all are feeling great about your decision to have surgery. YOU are worth it. And you will not even believe how GREAT your life will be when you are at your goal weight and feeling wonderful. This is truly a life changing procedure. I cannot even begin to articulate how different my life is now. I wasted a lot of years being fat and feeling bad, both physically and emotionally. I am trying to make up for lost time now. It is so good to look and feel normal. I wear size 8-10 pants, size med. in tops and dresses. My wrists are so small that I can't wear my watch and my wedding rings are going to have to be re-sized  because I am afraid of losing them. The night before surgery, I thought we were going to have to cut them off, that's how fat I was and how tight those rings were. Good luck to you all. jean

Thank you guys for the input. I could not hack the Nazi approach.  They only saw the few things I was not doing, nothing good about the good I was doing.  I am the type of person to not take abuse, I felt abused. I could not hack all the milk either.  Dr. G and his staff do not push Milk, YAYYYYYYY!!!

I too, had surgery at the U of I  on 04/24/07 by Dr. Samuel. I agree with the previous post about the nurse being Nazi like at first and then wonderful after the surgery.I think that she is like that so you will get serious about the surgery and succeed in the future.  I have nothing bad to say about the hospital. I had a wonderful experience there. I am 8 weeks out and doing great. 41 lbs lost since day of surgery. I have 4 family members who had had surgery done here as well and rave about t he program to everyone.  Tonya

Topic: RE: University of Iowa anyone????

I had my surgery with Dr. Samuel on 2/12/07.

At first, I felt that one particular nurse was really hard on me as I was trying to loose weight pre-op. She would really tear into me on the months I did not lose weight. I thought to myself, "why am I paying for someone to be so hard on me?" But then I reminded myself that the most important reason to choose a program is surgical excellence.  U of I is where this surgery was invented. The surgeons are phenomenal -- I can't stress this enough. They perform where it really counts -- in the operating room. They tend to bypass less intestine (for me, 105 cm) than some surgeons, too (which is better for your overall health). Some docs will bypass more, so they can have patients who loose faster, but end up having more intolerance issues and nutritional deficiencies. You might want to research this. In this instance, they are doing the right thing, as opposed to the popular thing, which I think says a lot about their philosophy. By the way, the nurses totally loosened up after I had the surgery. I do believe that they are Nazi-like at first, because they want to see if you are able to separate from food before you divorce it, if you know what I mean. The follow-up has been great. I have regularly scheduled follow-up appointments. I attend monthly support group meetings that are very educational and emotionally fulfilling. This group truly cares about each and every patient, I can tell you that. They put their hearts into it, and you will feel that. I have read wonderful things about Glass**** -- I'm sure he's a great choice. I do think a lot of folks are scared away from U of I because of their initial hardline approach. But here I sit, 4.5 months out, 81 pounds down (18 lost pre-surgery), with no complications, side effects or intolerances.

Topic: RE: I am back :)

HI Angel, Glad to see you are back. As crazy as it sounds go back to the very basics right after surgery. Like the eggs, refried beans and cottage cheese as that will jump start your weight loss. I worked for me. And then try and exercise some how every day and see how that goes.  Good Luck!!! Stephanie
