I am glad you are posting about your hypoglycemia.....I have also developed it and it is getting worse over time. I had RNY in Oct of 05 and started having episodes a year ago. At first, I thought it was high blood sugar, but then I did some research and discovered the whole area of reactive hyypoglycemia... I started training for a marathon and switched from a high protein diet to a higher carb diet and have I just bottomed out....I start the process of testing next week.....my doctor has ordered the labs two hours after a meal.... It is getting to the point for me, too, that all I can eat is meat and vegies!  I eat some protein bars and shakes, too, but any sugar or carb product is like playing with fire....

I have also started gaining weight too and am very very prone to water weight gain/bloating...I feel tired all the time and foggy, too! I didn't know any of this when I went into the surgery.... Again thank you for your posts and I would love to talk more to you about your experiences.

Hi Angie! I'm not sure who all has turned you down, but did you go to Columbia?  My mom also lives at the lake, and I have to say, the only successful person who has had wls that she knows (in that area) went through Columbia I believe.  I'll double check with her today. I love Dr Glas**** in Cedar Falls, but I'm not sure with how strict his program is, if they would take someone on who lives so far away...  I know he has worked with some pretty high BMIs, but not sure *how* high. Good luck!!! Amy

I'm home from Mayo after a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy on the 25th.  Doing okay.  About the same issues after have open RNY.  My roux limb is extremely grouchy and I must eat very small bits and drink small sips.  The good news is that I'm lost 9 of the 15 pounds I'd gained because of the hypoglycemia.   The hypoglcycemia seems to be gone.  Haven't had a sugar below 77, but haven't really eaten much either. My recliner is calling me. Lyn

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at U of I.  I had my surgery there Feb. 26, 2007 with Dr. Jamal.  They have been really great toward me (especially the staff).  I followed the directions they gave me pre-surgery and didn't have the Nazi-like experience.  If you cheat, they'll call you on it..as well they should.  They gave me a specific amount of weight to lose in 3 weeks before my 2nd consult.  I lost the required amount and they were all for me having surgery.  Some people they don't give a specific amount because I think they want to see how serious and dedicated you are.   I am now down 99 lbs. from the day I started my pre-surgery diet.  I couldn't be happier. Hope you have a better experience with your new doctor.

Hi Kim, One thing you will learn in this whole process is that if you want the best, you have to be patient. I know it's not easy but definately worth it. You can find other surgeons who can get you in quicker but they may not be as skilled. One thing you may not be aware of is that Dr G is fellowship trained in laproscopic surgery. Not many of the local baraitric surgeons went this route. He got his training at one of the largest and most well-known bariatric programs in the country . The University of Pittsburg Medical Center, where he trained,  is one of the institutions to pioneer laparoscopic surgery for treating obesity and its related complications. He trainedunder some very renouned bariatric surgeons &, if I remember correctly, did something like over 500 surgeries even before he came to CF to open his practice.  If you'd like to learn more about him & his practice, check out an even better website,    http://www.obesityhelpiowa.com/     Be sure to click on "Surgery explanation" & view the videos.  By the way, to answer your question, I'd fill it out & sent it in now. It can't hurt to get the ball rolling & even if you decided not to go there after attending the seminar, you're not out anything. Dixie

Topic: Just Starting the Journey
I have finally decided this is the journey for me.  I have registered to attend the free required information seminar with Dr. Matt Glass****  The seminar is July 17th.  I am very excited to attend this and get things rolling.  I have received my 25 page health questionaire from his office and have it completed.  Does anyone know if I can go ahead and return it now or if I should wait and hand it at the seminar?  I have also schedule myself an appointment with my PCP for a physical which I am doing this Friday.  I talked with my PCP nurse about what I am wanting to do so they have gone ahead and ordered my EKG and blook workup.  I had that done last week.  I have spoken with my insurance company BC/BS of IA Alliance Select.  They do cover wls and have sent me all the requirements.  I don't think I will too much trouble getting preaproved. I did call Dr. G's office to see how soon I could get my consultation after the seminar.  I was told it would probably take 2-3 months!  That seems like an awful long time.  Has anyone else recently attended one of his seminars?  If so, how did you have to wait for your initial consultation? I am not a very patient person.  I know I am going to have to be with this as it all take time.
