I chose RNY over LAPBAND because I need consequences to succeed.  If I eat sugar there are consequences.  If I over eat there are consequences.  This helps keep me in line.  I am 5 weeks out and 41lbs gone! Plus there is no worries about slippage or costly fills.

Hi Melissa,

I just started my journey.  I have my consult in January since I had to switch insurances to cover the surgery.  I also started my 6 month supervised diet.  Which I could kick myself for not starting sooner.  I live in Mt Pleasant and I picked Dr Glas**** in Cedar Falls.  I was impressed with his seminar/training and their support.  It is only a litte further drive than Grinnell.  I had a hard time finding any info on U of I so I pursued Cedar Falls.

Had my initial consult today ......Really like my surgeon ..... however I have a 50/50 chance of having the lapband ... Surgeon said I was "borderline". The surgeon feels my cardiac risk factors are .... risky .... however we're going ahead like I'm going to be approved by their internal review board. Said most risks are like .05% but would say mine are like 5% or greater...... I've already talked to my cardiologist and I'll get a stress test to be sure and he said it won't be a problem clearing me. (He's confident even if it takes an angiogram) So I'm not worried about a cardiac clearance ..... I'm just worried my surgeon may think I'm too much of a risk for the table for the lapband......... Anyone else ever had these issues? any suggestions???? I'm so confident in my cardiologist that I don't trust anyone else. Thanks

Well... sort of.  LOL About four years ago I went through the process in Grinell.  The office staff was wonderful!  The problem was with my insurance (it sucked at that time!!).  I couldn't have the surgery.  Now I have BC/BS of Ia.  I know that they cover the procedure, so I'm thinking about going for it again.   I live in West Burlington, and my family is all in this area.  I'm not worried about being in the hospital and not having anyone there with me, hubby will need to be here with the kiddos anyway.  hehe SOOO... my question is this... where should I go??  I have called Trinity in the QC and they didn't answer the phones today, and never called me back.  Not sure what's up with that, I wouldn't think they'd close for the whole week for the holiday.  ??? Anyway... experiences with Trinity, and suggestions for other places are welcome (UofI, Grinnell, etc).

Topic: OH Events contest: where do YOU want us to come?
The 2007 event year is quickly coming to its end. We've had a lot of fun, met hundreds of people, made new friends, strengthened each other, and empowered ourselves to continue on our journeys. With the close of the 2007-year, our eyes turn to the future, to 2008. Where will we go? Our team has analyzed locations, researched demographics, met with support groups, consulted with area professionals for hours.. and HOURS.. and hours! We do this because YOU are worth it. It is our goal to reach out to as many people as possible. But, we can't decide where to kick off the 2008 year! We've arm wrestled, had ping pong tournaments, basketball games and other battles of wills. So... we need your help to make this decision! We're having a contest. Where do YOU want us to come to? Let us know! For the month of November, we will leave this post up. Reply and shout out to us where you want us to come to. If you have ever wished for OH to come to your area, now's the time to speak up! Get your friends, surgeon and support group involved! Simple reply to this post and let us know the area you want us to come to. At the end of November, we will count up all of the votes and we will make the announcement in December. Rules of the game: -Since this is a member's contest, you must be a member to vote -Each member can only vote once for the same area -Members CAN vote for multiple locations -One post, one vote. If you want to vote for another location, make a separate reply. -All votes have to be a reply to this one of the 'contest' posts -Due to logistics, we may not be able to come to the exact city requested, but we will come to that 'area' as close as possible. So now is the time to let your voice be heard! Where do YOU want us to come to?

Topic: RE: Step 1 - Which of these Insurance Providers Would be Best for Lap Band Approval?
I work for the State and I chose Iowa Select / Wellmark Alliance Select. Best deal in my opinion ...... I have premiums .... but after $ 250 medicine deductable for me ......the rest of year is free. My out of pocket max for me is 600 and 800 family. I wouldn't change for nothing. Excellent excellent ins. Blue Access wouldn't cover Bariatric. Just my .02 cents
