I have a similar story as yours.. I started the process back in 1999 (!!!!) but because of insurance and then lack thereof due to self employment, I wasn't able to have surgery until just this August. I have BCBS of Iowa as well and they were absolutely fabulous to work with.
You have a lot of great choices as there are a lot of great surgeons in Iowa. I had mine done in Cedar Falls, which is definitely a bit away from Burlington. Iowa City or Davenport would be closer.
I definitely recommend checking out a couple different surgeons if you're going to have to travel regardless. I checked out three different places before deciding on Cedar Falls. It's all about what you feel the most comfortable with.
Topic: RE: Why one vs the other?
I was originally scheduled for the RNY surgery, during the surgery to discover that I had cirrhosis of the liver, which is counterintuitive to having the RYN. My surgeon had no choice but to close, and to resubmit the insurance for the lap band, if I was yo have any procedure done.
Now three months, postsurgery, I am very happy with the lap band. I'm down about 65 pounds, have reduced or limited most of my medications and will be having my third fill sometime after Thanksgiving.
Each fill for me runs about $1200, but from now until the first the year my insurance is 100% coverage.

Thank you both so much! I am biting my nails *tisk tisk* but I'm trying to be patient. I keep looking at my cell phone about every ten minutes to make sure there isn't a missed call! I'm just hoping it's this week that they call. I keep thinking happy thoughts! Thank you all so much for your support! It means the world to me!

Does anyone know?? I have been looking at that as the surgery I'd like to have. I don't look forward to going to Chicago though...

Good luck on your quick approval. I know with BC/BS mine only took 1-2 days for approval! I had my surgery at Grinnell (even though I'm a WDM'er also).
Take care,

I went to Fort Dodge for a few reasons.
1. It was closer
2. Dr. VerSteeg has a ZERO mortatliy rate. (most in Iowa do though)
3. He uses the Anvil stapler to staple the pouch to the intestine. Less than 5% stricture rate.
4. He only does Lap proceedures. Unless he has to open you up.
Also all the rooms at the hospital where he performs the surgery are private.
