Hi There!  Strangely enough it was at Methodist! in the morning leading up to the surgery it was GREAT! but afterwords it was just as if they were SO busy or something they just couldn't be bothered with her unless they were forced to.  shows that things can be different for each person.  she is doing great now though and doesn't regret having the surgery at all and is very happy with it.  GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

Getting insurance approval is usually the biggest roadblock to having surgery.  I was denied twice before I finally went to bat and fought and actually got them to change their requirements for approval.
What type of insurance do you have?  Who within the insurance company told you that WLS was covered?
Companies often offer different types of insurance plans and sometimes you are under one that excludes coverage for WLS.  So if you called in to the insurance company they could have told you they cover it--but not known that you were under a plan that excludes it.  Insurance companies are messy business!  You need to get (in writing) your plans coverage and look closely.  It should tell you whether or not it covers the surgery and if it does, it should tell you what requirements you need to meet for approval.  Good luck!

Stacey,

Where in Des Moines did your mom have her LapBand surgery?  I had Lap RNY last month at Methodist and they were AWESOME.  I was completely treated with respect by ALL the staff and never had any problem at all with getting the wrong meds, drinks, etc.  They were all very well educated on how to care for WLS patients.  I'm sorry your mom had such a bad time!

Topic: New to Forum - HELLO!

Hello everyone!

I am Kim (a/k/a Kid Krazed Kim) and I live in Pleasant Hill, which is a suburb of Des Moines.  I have been married for almost 21 years and have 5 children.  I work full-time and my life is filled with Khaos, KonfliKt, and Konfusion, which is why I am Krazed!

I joined the OH website in June when I began researching WLS.  I have since consulted with Dr. Eibes and jumped thru the hoops to get the intial pre-surgical approval packet submitted to my insurance company.  Unfortunately, I was DENIED on the first try and have to complete a 6-month doctor supervised diet before my insurance will consider it again.  So, I have been doing that - going to the monthly doctor appointments at least - for about 2 1/2 months and will finish around the first of April.  My hope is to have WLS - either lap band or RnY, but leaning more toward RnY - in the last spring / early summer.

I normally post some type of blog once a week.  Sometimes I just post quotes, song lyrics, or other types of writings.  Sometimes I post my poetry, or my rants.  Ya just never know what I'll post!  LOL!

So, if you are out and about, and nosy like me, come on by Kid Krazed Kim's Korner , take a peek at my Kronikles, and drop me a line or two!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I live in Des Moines and had to go thru U of I and it took no time at all to get thru.  I looked into a place here in DM before I found out I had to go to IA city and after that first visit I'm SOOOO glad I was forced to go over there. the entire staff at iowa city was GREAT!!!! the stay in the hospital was really good for a hospital stay. the nurses were very caring and specialized with WLS so I never had a problem with anything I needed to have done.  My mom had a lapband here in DM at the place I looked into and stayed at a local hospital and they were not WLS prepared and she had to reorder drinks and the staff was not helpful with her meds or what she could eat or drink. so I really believe a specialized hospital area is the way to go and my mom would have gone to IA city if she didn't have to go for fills so often.

hope that helps with, good luck!

If bariatric surgery is not a covered procedure under the insurance contract then an appeal will not do you any good- medical insurance policies can vary just as house and auto insurance policies can. If bariatric surgery was a covered benefit and you were denied- then you would have grounds for an appeal.

Just like some auto policies don't cover glass repair or roadside assistance some medical insurance policies don't offer bariatric surgery.

Many people have run into this issue- I personally decided on self pay but some change jobs or insurance companies if possible

It is a tough situation- I hope you find an answer that works for you
