Does anyone have problems with Hypoglycemia?
I am checking to see if anyone has any problems with hypoglycemia since they have had the surgery? I am at goal but since July 2005 I have developed Hypoglycemia that can not be controlled. I just wondered if anyone else has this problem and what they are doing about it? Please let me me know. I am currently seeing a Doctor for this but I am being sent to Mayo Clinic and from what I understand if no other options available will lose my pancreas............DebbyB
I have mild problems. But they seem to be getting worse. I did a google search for hypoglycemia and gastric bypass a while back. There is a syndrome that does happen to us. It's pretty rare but sometimes hard to diagnose. You might want to google and see if you can find it. I really don't remember too much about it since it didn't see to fit what was going on with me at this time. That is something no one is warned about when thinking about this surgery.
You might want to post the question on the WLS grads board. People there are at least a year out and more. Someone there might have the same problem or know of someone who has.
Good luck and keep us informed.

Debby,
I'm sorry you're going through this. Problems with the pancreas can be pretty serious. I think going to Mayo is a good idea.
I've been doing quite a bit of reading lately about endocrine problems & gastric bypass & it looks like this is related to dumping. Do you dump? It also seems to be not all that uncommon, although your case sounds more extreme & serious. From the things I read usually they can control it with diet, often eating more often, & medication but ocassionally need to do surgery. I hope they can find a way to control this for you.
I have to disagree with something Lyn said. She said, "That is something no one is warned about when thinking about this surgery." I do think most patients are told about the complications. We just are so focused on the surgery & the positives that we forget that there can be complications. I don't recall this particular complication, but just days before my surgery I had to read & initial each paragraph of a very long document, several pages long, that named every complication that could happen to me not only during surgery but in the years to come. I had to do it all over agin last year when I had my plastic surgeries. I suppose it is for malpractice protection but I remember that it really opened my eyes and made me think seriously of what could conceivable happen to me. Like you, I made the decision to go ahead with it. I felt that the chances of complications were much smaller than the complications I was having by suffering from morbid obesity. I apoligize to Lyn if I mis-intepreted her remark. Perhaps she was referring to that particular complication.
I consider myself very fortunate. Although I haven't lost as much weight as I was hoping to, I have had very few & minor complications, if you don't count my gall bladder problems, & I'm not convinced that I wasn't having problems with that for many years. I consider myself fortunate. I hope you will be just as fortunate.

Yup, I was referring to the hypoglycemia in particular. That wasn't something that I was ever told about and only have found out about it in my internet wanderings. Otherwise, I was well versed in the common complications - leaks, blockages, malabsorbtion, calcium problems etc. Not a word about hypoglycemia.
