I need some suggestions please
I am truly struggling with the smoking thing I have tried cold turkey but it isnt working I can not use patches because I am allergic to the sticky stuff on them and we tried zyban a few years ago and was allergic to that does anyone have any good tips for this ?????? I know I have to be smoke free for 3 months and this is the hardest thing to do
Sheila, I feel your pain. My surgery is in a little more than 2 weeks. I was also told by Dr. Coster to be smoke free for 3 mo. I have had to reschedule my surgery 2 times do to not being able to get the time off of work. The quitting smoking has been a total nightmare! I'm sorry I don't have much support to offer you. I have tried the patch. I ended up in the hospital doc thought I was having a heart attack(false alarm) so now I am too chicken to try them again. The Lozenges burnt the h*** out of my mouth and throat(thought maybe I had the jalepeno flavored ones
)so could not use those either.
I am still struggling with only 2 weeks to go. I go on January 4th for my 3 hour pre op interview at Grinnell hospital. Geuss I'll know then if all is a go. I know someone else that went to grinnell and had smoked on the way to the hospital the day of her surgery. But she had a different surgeon.
I will let you know how the fourth goes. Best of luck to you. Email me any time.

Hi Sheila,
I quit smoking about 7 years ago and I had a 4 pack a day habit!!!! The only thing that worked for me was the nicorette gum. I Swapped it gum for cig (not what the directions said) depending on how much you smoke. Dont chew it like gum, pretend it is chewing tobacco and put it in your lip or cheek. That's how you get the nicotine from it is in your skin.
Then go places you can't smoke like the movies, you'll feel like your cheating because you get the nicotine (from the gum) but are in a no smoking place. The gum can take the physical place of your cigs, like if you go someplace you grab your smokes, now you grab your gum. etc.
You may become hooked on the gum, I did after about 6 months, then I used the patch to get off the gum.
Once you quit. NEVER, NEVER NEVER even take a puff off a cig or you'll be right back where you started.
Good Luck to you, I hope this gives you a boost in the right direction.

Hi Sheila...I really dont have an answer for you! Sorry I can just tell you what I did! I was a 3-4 pack a day person for over 20 years I was on 2 inhalers and breathing treatments and I still couldnt hardly breath! I got on a get healthy kick,I picked a day(it was about a month away) and said I was quitting on that day!!! I told everyone that was my last day to smoke,of course noone believed me!! I just kept telling myself that was going to be my last day....that day came and left and I havent touched a ciggarette in almost 3 years!!!! I breath just fine (except when I have to breath a bunch of second hand smoke that is!!) no longer have breathing treatments and dont use an inhaler!!! You can do it just have confidence in yourself!!!! Good Luck!! Lori
Happy New Year!!!
