Hello fellow Iowans!! Most of us have experienced our snow storm we had last night.....I hope it tapers off like they say its going to...or I will have a real problem getting to Grinnell on Thursday! I was soo freaked out yesterday about the weather and missing my surgery. I had such a great pre-op consult that all of my fears have been taken care of (although I am sure that by time surgery time comes I will be freaked out again!). I totally feel i know what to expect before, during and after surgery. The only thing I am concerned about is the pain. I hope to be one of the lucky ones who experience little pain afterwards...but I am not counting on it. Last night we were in a winter storm warning until 6pm Wednesday...and expecting 8 in of snow...this morning I woke up and we were in a little ole advisory till 4 with just a couple more inches of snow expected. Has anyone heard what it is like in Grinnell today? or is in the area? It looked like maybe a little icy...... billie jo

Billie Jo, what time is your surgery? I have a 1year check up with Dr. Coster tomorrow at 10:00. I will try to stop to see you. That is if I even make it to Grinnell. It isn't as important for me as it is you at this point. I can always reschedule my appointment, but I sure wouldn't want to reschedule surgery unless I had to. I wish you the best of luck. I was also concerned I would be in so much pain I couldn't stand it or look like I was a sissy girl who didn't tolerate pain. I was so surprised how little pain I had. I hope that is what you find also. Yeah it hurt like a cut when you stretched the skin around the incision getting in and out of bed. But the nurses are real good about helping you and telling you how to do it so it doesn't hurt. And the shower is the best feeling you will have when they let you take it. The nurses are all so good at Grinnell you won't have any problems. Remember to stay ahead of the pain and hit that morphine button before you get up, before you go for a walk, or when ever it feels like it is time. You can't get to much. I used it regularly that first day, but didn't need it after that. Well I will be thinking of you and praying that you have a great uneventful surgery, and car drive to Grinnell tomorrow. Hope to see you or at least your family tomorrow. Cindy G.

Billie Jo~ I'll bet the roads will be nice and clear by the time you need to leave on Thursday. Just give yourself some extra time to get there. You no doubt have a lot on your mind right now and do not need ole man winter breathing down your neck too!!! Are you planning open or lap RNY?? Because I can tell you I was honestly surprised at how little pain I had from the surgery following lap RNY. It was no worse than my tubal ligation. There will be plenty of pain meds available to you too. don't be reluctant to use them. Take a nice relaxing bath , count your blessings, and think healthy thoughts. It is your day, and it is what you have dreamed about for along time. You will do great!! Nicole T.

Good Luck to you Billie Jo, I was able to have a lap RNY and it wasn't bad at all as far as the pain goes. I used my morphine pump and took advantage of the pain meds offered and they really help. Stay ahead of the pain and you'll be fine. I just had my surgery on Mon, and got to go home Tue night so I beat the snow home. It is very frustrating when you get to worring about how the weather can mess things up. Think positive happy thoughts and you'll do fine. Good Luck to you!! Terry
