Hemoglobin Question

If anyone out there has any insite for me, I'd appreciate it. I just got back late Wednesday from PS in Brazil and I had all my pre-op tests done there. My question is that the surgeon commented that one of the two Hemoglobin tests were borderline low. He said that anything below 11.0 would be unexceptable but that mine was 11.5. Just barely legal, lol. He also told me that "if" his Anestesiologist saw problems during the surgery that he would have to stop and not finish everything. My "Wish List" was #1, Breast Seromas fixed, #2 Fat Rolls on my Rib Cage under my breasts flattened, Mons Lift (do way with the Ken Doll look!), and lastly, a small Inner Thigh Lift. He was pretty certain things would be fine, up until the last Wish, (Thigh Lift). He said that he go as far as he could but that he might not be able to do the thighs but he did them. Anyone know what this hemoglobin test was or more so, is there anything I'm lacking in that I should be supplementing it with? I've not had proper follow-up Labs and I had asked to do them in Brazil but didn't get time. Any help is appreciated. Peggy [email protected]

Hemoglobin is part of red blood cells - it binds (?) with oxygen and carries it in your blood. I believe for a female, the low end of normal is 12, but it's been a long time since I had to pay attention to lab values! You could be anemic or it could be from several different vitamin/nutritional deficencies. It _could_ be something more serious, but usually it's something simple like that. You could probably just get a CBC from you Dr and find out easily. Good luck! Amy

Peggy, Check out the following link. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003645.htm This should explain the hemoglobin test for you. At 11.5 you are a little low, so probably a bit anemic. I would follow up with your local doctor so they can recomend a course of action. I have a tendency to run a little low myself. Hope this is helpful. Good Luck! Paula
