Had our sleep study done...
We had our sleep study done!! About 12:30; my friend and I both got that lovely mask put on. So, I would think that this says it all.......we DO have sleep apnea, correct?? The gal at the hospital said it would take about 2 weeks to get the results back. I just do not know how anyone can get use to sleeping with that mask thing on??? I was in a panic trying to breath and then they tried another style on me, I did manage to leave it on but it was so uncomfortable. So, if we do indeed have sleep apnea and have to get one of the machines at home, how do you get use to it?
Amy, I'm surprised they aren't getting back to you sooner. When I had my study I was told that the doctor would be contacting me within 24 hours because if you have it, they want you on the C-PAP as soon as possible "just in case." Maybe this is an indication that if you have it, it isn't very bad.
I never did get used to wearing the mask. Most people find that once they get used to it, they sleep so much better that it's worth the hastle. Looking back, I know I did have it but I didn't think it was bad as they were saying. Most of my problems with getting used to it were probably in my head. I just didn't want to wear it. I never slept well with it, had headaches, & only got about 3-4 hours sleep a night. I was always exhausted & never got into REM sleep. When I told the neurologist who perscribed it, that I was having trouble, he told me I needed a psychitrist! I have never been rude to a doctor but I literally told him he was crazy & picked up my things & walked out. Then I called my WLS surgeon's PA & in tears told her what happened. She got me in with the pulmonologist they use & he worked with me some. I still didn't like it but wore it until my WLS. I never took it out of the case after I came home from my surgery. Within 30-40 lbs I knew the problem was gone anyway.
I'm not trying to scare you. Most people have no problem with the machine & it is a life saver. But you do have to be in the right mindset & I wasn't . I have an idea that no matter what changes they made, mask VS nasal canula, humidified VS none, etc, nothing would have helped me. I didn't want to wear it. Maybe the doctor was right & I needed a psychichrist!
Good luck if you do need it. Hang in there. It isn't forever & will make your surgery much safer.
