I'd have to check the exact recipe that Dr G's office hands out, but as Dixie said below, it's just making it thicker, with protein powder added in. So you're getting the chance to chew, plus you'll (hopefully) feel more full with the added protein.

You can do it Leslie! It really did get better for me after the 3rd or 4th day. I just wasn't hungry anymore. That's not to say there aren't some side effects....I can't even look at Jell-O, let alone eat it now! Sugar free popsicles were my savior. You might want to ask them if you can have tomato soup, I know Dr. G's office allowed that for one of their patients a few months ago. Good luck, hang in there! Colleen

I dn't know for sure if this is what she was talking about but I ate lots of Finger Jello (Jello Jigglers, Knox Blox, all pretty much the same thing.) The easiest recipe is 2-1/2 cups boiling water (Do not add cold water.) 2 pkg. (8-serving size each) JELL-O Brand Gelatin, any flavor Mix it together well, pour into a pan, & refrigerate until hard. I imagine you could mix in some protein powder before refrigerating to give it more protein. I ate this both before & after surgery during the clear liquid phases without the extra protein. It works well with either regular jello or sugar free & it does give you a chance to chew. And, yes, although you eat it in a solid form, it melts & is considered a clear liquid. Even counts toward your required amount of liquid consumed! Dixie

Good morning everyone..... It's Day 5 of the liquid diet. I am hanging in there although I will confess that right before I go to bed at night, I have a stick of string cheese. I have decided that if this diet is just so I lose weight before surgery, that isn't going to hurt ( I am not eating any regular jello or popsicles so saving a lot of carbs there) and I'm thinking I won't even need it tonight. It's just that my stomach growls and growls and I can't get to sleep so I tried to choose something that was high protein and would stick with me long enough to get to sleep. It is getting easier but the worst times are when I smell food. It's not even that I want to eat, I just can't stand the stomach growling and empty feeling. At any rate, I'm sure I'll survive Janelle, sorry I missed your earlier post about jello with protein powder, I just added it to the jello and stirred it up before putting in the fridge. It's not clear and a little foamy on top but it works. Dr. Glas****'s office gave me a sample menu and the recipe was on the back of that. Leslie

Leslie, I don't think this liquid diet is about weight loss. It is about shrinking your liver so the dr. doesn't have to open you up all the way. Wouldn't you rather have the surgery lap??? Much quicker recover and less complications. So eating a piece of string cheese is the LAST thing you want to eat. Even though cheese is healthy, has protein and calcium, it is also loaded in FAT. that is what you are supposed to be avoiding. i didn't have to do a liquid diet pre-op, but I did put myself on a very low fat, soft diet a week before surgery so that I could make sure my liver was small enough in order to do the surgery lap. So i feel for you. But please.....don't eat cheese if you are going to cheat. Eat a fat free pudding or something. jean

Jean, it's low-fat mozzarella cheese so not much fat there but it's okay since last night I was alright before going to bed and didn't need it. Hmmm..would it have been better to eat a little piece of that 99% fat free lunch meat or something? I just wanted something high protein so that it would stay on my stomach long enough for me to get to sleep. I've already lost 12 lbs so it's going well I think. I guess I just don't really understand the whole physiology behind the clear liquid diet. Seems some doctors don't require any special diet beforehand and others the whole two weeks. Leslie
