UPDATE ON MY DAUGHTER

Well we are home after spending 3 days @ the U of I. She does have type 1 diabetes. I give her 4 shots of insulin a day and have to check her blood sugar 5 times(unless she is actting odd). She has taken all of this so well. Shots and finger sticks don't bother her at all. Me on the other hand I have a really hard time doing this. I know it will get easier with time though. She has to be on a "constant carb " diet. Every carb that she eats I have to record. That is probably the hardest part mentally. Snacking is going to be her biggest downfall. How do you tell an 8 year old that she has to have everything she eats approved by mom or dad. We have explained to her that if she eats something she shouldn't how sick it will make her. Another hard thing is she did not even feel sick. She was just constantly going to the bathroom and drinking enough to keep a couple of camels hydrated. The hospital gave us some awesome education though and I know all will be ok in the end. I will probably be calling on you guys for support though. By the way I go to see Dr. Coster on the 19th hopefully I'll get a date that day and her and I can go through the dietary change together.

Whew! Makes my mind at ease to know you and your daughter are home. How's the quitting smoking going? Not so well here. My husband quit on Monday. He hasn't smoked a cigarette all week!!! Bless his heart!! I, on the other hand, have been bad. I started working out though!!! Please email me and fill me in on how you are doing. I will keep you and your little one in my heart. That poor little thing!!! Big hugs, Jen

Kim, its always hardest for Mom I think! Hang in there, Mom! Kids adjust easier than us and she obviously has a great Mom there to support her as she learns to adjust to this. Hey- I just noticed you are going to see Dr. Coster- I go to see him on 8/8- will be looking forward to hearing how your appt goes!

Morning Kim Hugs to your daughter. I agree it's harder on parents. The one good thing is with the "one touch" testers now drawing blood doesn't hurt nearly as bad. WalMart has some wonderful salve for callouses that build up from blood testing. You will find it with the diabetic supplies. One word of sage advice keep an eye on her feet make sure she wears shoes at all times as well as socks. Keep an eye for ulcers on her feet. When swimming wear the swim shoes. This is just as important as testing her blood. If she does develop any kind of sores on her feet get her to the dr right away don't try treating it yourself. You were probably given this education. A family friend was type 1 NEVER took care of himself well I won't go into details but this was a hard lesson. Even though I'm no longer on diabetic meds I still care for my feet at all times. And keep an eye on my dad's. Give your little trooper a big hug from me. Good luck to you at your appt. Hugs Carolyn
