My father in law went in this past tuesday for his surgery and when they took him down his heart rate dropped into the lower 30's. He had heart surgery like 10 years ago and his apical pulse normally runs in the 40's and 50's. Was anyone here in similiar shoes???? He is a little apprehensive now and is scheduled next tuesday for surgery. The cadiologist gave the ok and He wants the surgery he has done so good with his 2 weeks of clear liquids and I would be a little scared myself. I was scared when I had my surgery and didn't have the worry of a low heart rate. Any input is deeply appreciated. Thanks Kim L.

Hi Kim, This probably won't help at all but when I was preparing for my plastic surgery my pulse was running in the low 50's. They weren't concerned and attributed it to exercising. When I was in the holding area just before the surgery I set off the alarm when my pulse dropped to the low 40's. I asked if this was a problem & the nurse said that having it that low before the surgery was OK but if it had dropped during surgery, they would have been concerned. It stayed low while I was in the hospital but the last time I went to my doctor it was back in the normal range. I have been told that a low heart rate is good if you are healthy. Athletes have low rates usually but it can also be a sign of an underactive thryoid. I had my doctor run the blood test for hypothroidism because of not losing weight, being tired all the time, the low heart rate, being cold all the time (aren't we all?), dry, itchy skin, and a few other things. He said he doubted that was the problem and the test came back negative. Has your FIL had this test? It may be part of the problem. If positive, it may explain part of his weight problem. Treatment for hypothroidism is simple. You take a synthetic thryoid hormone for the rest of your life. Dixie

I am pretty positive he has had his thyriod checked. I know that your thyriod can really mess you up. I will ask him though. The anestiologist is the one i guess who called off his surgery the other day. Angela told my mother in law dr wouldn't have rescheduled him if he didn't think he was a candidate. I can see where this is scarey - wanting the surgery but the fear of your pulse dropping to dangerously low levels and he has health problems. So..... I don't know. Thanks as always for being here for us! Kim L
