When did you tell your employer that you were going to have surgery? I have some appointments coming up, and I want to tell my employer, but I don't want them to "find" a reason to fire me.

Sorry I can't help, but I did tell my boss After I got Approved. Just because I have had to have a few appointments that I wasn't going to be able to get time of work for. I still have to left my HR department know but I'm going to wait until I have a date. Have you picked a surgeon yet? Good luck.

I am going to go to Mercy Capital. They seem like they have an outstanding program there. Oh and a low death rate. I bumped up my appointment to see my PCM. I go next thursday. So hopefully she won't give me a hard time....I don't imagine she would. I'm just debating to tell my boss yet. Thanks for replying.

I had been seriously looking into (and being tested for) surgery since January of this year. I didn't want to tell a lot of people about it so I tried my best to work my appointments around my work schedule - which got harder as time went on! Finally I told my office manager that I was going through some medical testing - but didn't want to divulge what it was for because I wasn't sure if I was going to be approved or even if I was going to go through with it. I reassured her everything was going to be fine and I didn't have anything like cancer! lol When I got approved, I still didn't tell them but had to file for short-term disability so I knew they were going to as****pt saying I didn't want to talk about it, but I was going to be OK! They finally got it out of me but I asked them to keep it quiet as it was a personal matter. By law they really don't need to know what it's for - but for good office-relations it probably is best you confide in them and ask them to protect your privacy. Thankfully my office was supportive. The girls in the office are all a flitter with "what it could be" and here I am at home, safely recovering from a surgery well done at Mercy Capitol. It's nice to hear you're choosing that program. It's a strict one, but it's SO worth it!! I'm just starting my thrid week out and I've had no nausea or vomiting and really no ill-effects other than the usual owies after surgery. Please feel free to read my profile or email me with any questions you may have. Congratulations to you on your journey!

I told mine as soon as I made the decision to have the surgery, months before the actual procedure. I just felt it was a good thing to do & I had no problems with anyone knowing that I was having it done. By the time I had the surgery hundreds probably knew about it. I certainly wasn't ashamed of having the surgery. However, only you know the atmosphere where you work. If I were afraid of being fired I certainly wouldn't tell until I absolutely had to tell. Dixie

I'm very close to my manager so she was pretty much with me the whole way through and so wonderful. I would really hope that they wouldn't find a way to let you go due to an upcoming surgery. Of course, you may be able to be "vague" about the details of surgery. I'm unsure. i wish I could help more!!! Good luck, Jen
