Hello all! I admit, I haven't posted for a VERY LONG time, and then I think it was only once or twice. My initial consultation with Dr. Coster in Grinnell was scheduled for June 8th. They have now moved that up to March 21st!! Here I thought I had a few months to get everything done, like my phych eval, paperwork, etc. Now I only have a few weeks. Though I am excited to begin my journey, I'm still nervous and have a couple of questions. What can I expect in the psych evaluation? What can I expect during the initial consultation? Thanks! Lori

Lori: I'm sure the psych eval varies with each Dr and insurance company. I had to take an MMPI which is a 580 + question test. I also did an eating disorders inventory test, and had a couple hours with the psychologist. I had Dr Schwartz for my surgeon. When I went for my initial consultation, he went over my diet and health history, and told me I was a candidate for WLS. He checked me over quick, and he said they'd submit my information to insurance. As soon as they received an approval, surgery would be scheduled. I saw him Feb.17,2004 and had surgery April 2 !! Your approval could take longer, or may go just as quickly!! I know that the staff there are experts as far as what to send the the companies to get you approved!! Best of luck, keep us posted!! My psych eval sucked royally! I did it with Dr. Wellso in Cedar Rapids as Dr. Keating's office recommended him (initially started with Keating). He didn't really pay attention to me. I think basically if you acknowledge what needs to be done after surgery and you prove that you can handle it and are aware of the life changing events, you'll be fine. He just asked me about my history of depression and ups and downs in my weight...blah blah blah. Then it took forever for him to get it wrote up to send to the doc. I just got it to Dr. G's office last week and I had it done in November! The initial consult at the UIHC is much different than Dr. G's consult. UIHC it was about 6-8 hours of listening and asking questions about surgery. Dr. G's office was wonderful. They have you meet with a nutritionist and they just go over most of what you know already! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! And congrats for having your appt moved up! That's always a nice surprise!! hugs, jen

I didn't go thru the same place as you so can't offer much advice about the intial consult.....but usually it is a brief medical history/exam and lots of talking to lots of people!!! LOTS!!!! I also don't have much advice to give about a pysch eval.....I did not have to have one since I was already under the care of a pysch and she thought the surgery would be very beneficial for me.........BUT I can wish you the very best of luck with all your upcoming things!!! Take Care jesi

I just had my phsy eval 03/04 wirh DR. Eastin in des moines. He was great. It only took a half hour and he said he will send the info to my doctor. (Dr. Schwartzalso in Grinnell) this week. He asked me it I knew how my insides would look like after the surgery and I explained to him. He asked me if I have a family history of obesity. Just easy questions. He was really nice. Good luck.
