Sugar scare

Hi Gang, I usually drink an Advant Edge (carb control) protein drink once a day. (usually at work as I am not guaranteed an uninterupted meal) Anyhooo....last week when I bought them, I took one out of the rack, and the one behind it said "new package, same great taste". So I bought 4 of them. (stocking up). I drank one. The next day I drank another. The third day, for some unknown reason, I flipped it over to read an RDA % of something (don't remember now) and it said 190 calories. I knew this to be wrong, as they were previously 100 cal. So I look at the sugar content. 21 GRAMS AAARRGGHHHHHH....I had bought, AND DRANK, the regular shakes. I panicked. I did not get sick drinking the previous 2. Oh nooooo..... Am I going to be one that doesn't dump!?!?! And I consumed extra unknown calories to boot!! Then I was mad. So was this a fluke? I don't know. I don't plan on trying anything with sugar like that just to find out. I have never dumped, YET, and don't really want to give it a try. Needless to say, the rest of that 3rd shake didn't make it past my lips.....it went promptly down the drain. Do I sense a lesson to be learned here???? Always read your label and never ass-u-me..... Other than screwing that up, everything else seems to be going well. Getting my protein and fluids in. Am down 35 lbs since Jan 17. Down 57 lbs since last July. (found my old Weigh****chers card from July). I have been craving beef. Roast beef to be exact. I have had hamburger several times without incident. Last night at moms she had a roast in the oven. About drove me nuts. I did nibble a few 'strands' of it and it set well. And helped the craving. Now I just need to get my butt, and the rest of me, on my Gazelle for a little exercise. I hope everyone has a banner week. Hugs Sheila

I wouldn't worry to much......You can assume you still dump and don't try other stuff.....I am sure you didn't drink those shakes super fast, so it just might not have been enough sugar at the same time to make you dump.......like when you have a candy or candy bar...that is 10-30grams of sugar instantly ......BUT when you drink the sugar you are getting little bits at a time....which MOST people can handle little bits of sugar.....That is why it is SO IMPORTANT not to drink drinks with calories cause we can and we don't need calories from drinks.....in your case tho, having a protein drink and counting it as a meal is fine! I would return the other two cases for your lower sugar drinks.......We all screw up sometimes! Live and learn! Now about the roast......It was one of the irst meats I did good on.....my surgeon didn't want us to eat red meat for like 6 months.....but I called and told him I needed to try it, because I couldn't keep down, chicken or turkey or tuna.....sure enough I could do burger, roast, steak, anything red....lol!!!! We are all so different....as long as your surgeon says it is okay I would try the red meats....the saved me for the first 9-10 months....I can do chicken now, but I have to really watch it, and I still get sick when I try tuna most times Good luck.....sounds like you are doing great.....I too need to work on the exercises....story of my life Oh well!!! Take Care Jesi

Hi Sheila, Yes you may be one of the unlucky ones ( join the crowd, there are more of us than people realize). I suspected it when people kept asking how I could drink liquid Tylenol without dumping & then I caved & ate a cookie without problems. I have noticed that as time goes by sugar is bothering me more than it used to. I can still eat a bit but get nauseus if I eat a whole candy bar or more than a small cookie. I just have to use will power. In a way I think it's good to be able to eat sugar. That way if I do eat something with sugar accidently, like when I am at a friends house or a restrurant, I don't get sick. I just make sure I don't eat it regularly. I don't want to wreck what I have accomplished so far. As far as the beef goes, I can't remember if you can eat it yet per Dr G's instructions, but if you are at that point, buy shaved roast beef at the deli. It will go down "like butter." It's an excellent source of protein and easy to eat at work cold or hot. I still eat it that way often. I have a difficult time with beef normally- still can't eat steak, but the deli stuff has always been easier than the normal meat. I do have an old meat slicer that my mom gave me years ago & I can slice my own roasts with it & that makes it easier. Must be that the strands are cut & it works better than just chewing. I wouldn't be too worried about the shakes & if you can't return them, go ahead & drink them. I mean, it is a whole meal and only 190 calories. As long as you are satisfied with that as your meal, 190 caloris is not bad at all. Dixie

I also may be one who doesn't dump on sugar. I ate 4 robin's egg malted milk balls in a pretty short time and had no problem. I'm not going to repeat that tho. Just because I can certainly doesn't mean I should! Be careful with the beef thing. I threw up pretty hard on round steak that was tenderized and cooked in the pressure cooker. The only beef that really goes down well is beef tenderloin. Go figure. I can't talk my hubby into having that 3 or 4 times a week! I also can't do deli meats. Right back at me. I'm with Jesi on the tuna. That's a no go. Sometimes chicken is okay, sometimes it's not. Meat in general gives me problems. If not the going down and staying down, then the taste and/or texture. Never used to have that problem. But good ol' fashioned pot roast always works. I also need to get my butt moving. Wt loss has really slowed to a crawl and it's because I'm not exercising. Once the sun shines for more than one day, I'll feel more like it.

Morning Sheila I love the Atkins shakes, the chocolate is to kill for It has 170 calories. I have a hard time getting in my calories so I'll drink at least one per day sometimes 2. I haven't had problems with meat so far which is probably good & bad. Hamburger in good ole George Foreman, pot roast mmm mmm mmmmm I have been craving that for past few days. I can't stand tuna anymore which use to be a favorite of mine, especially tuna melts. Pork roast has been ok for me also. And ham is something I also crave getting the low-sodium ones. Maybe I'm bad but if I crave something I eat a little bit of it to get it out of my system. Did that before surgery also. I found that if I didn't take care of the craving I would be hitting the fridge or cupboards trying to substitute something else to settle the craving. All of us are different & will tolerate foods differently. Dumping? Went thru that a few times & did dump on mash potatoes for some reason! Hugs Carolyn
