Does anyone know of a good psychiatric in Des moines. The guy my PCP likes has a 3 month wait so I just found a guy in the phone book and went today and I think he was crazy. He only asked me a few questions and said he wanted me to see him and another psychiatric who had the surgery and then come again to take a 550 question test and another test. He did not make me fell comfortable at all and when I left there I was so upset. He said it will be months before he would know it I'm ready for the surgery. I have read eveything I can about this surgery and have been thinking about this for 2 years. My PCP and I have been talking about this and she thinks it would be great for me. So I need to go to someone who will talk to me not down to me just because I'm over weight. So if anyone can help PLEASE let me know. Thanks

Have you picked a surgeon yet? He probably uses a specific psychologist that is well versed in WLS. I went to Dr. Sundberg in Boone and hated the psychologist with a passion. I had to take an 800 question personality test. The whole experience was unpleasant. But he did approve me. You need to pick a program, go to their seminar and start there. They will have all the appointments lined up for you when it is time.

Thanks. I do have a surgeon in Grinnell but he said my PCP could tell me about a good psychologist but the only one she uses has a 3 month wait. So now I don't know what to do. I don't want to go to another psychologist like the one I went to today. Thanks for your help.

Morning Melissa, patience has never been a strong virtue with me! Wonder why surgeon wants you to see psych but doesn't have any to refer you to? Put some pressure on the surgeon I think, if he wants you to see one then he should have someone for you to see. Sorry can't be of any help. Carolyn

I used Mercy Capitol for my surgery.. I am VERY happy. They have a terrific program from prior to post surgery. I have had absolutely clear sailing since the time I came out of surgery. I saw Dr. Scott Eaton (Des Moines) for the psych eval. Got an appointment in less than a week and really liked him. No other testing was required... for me anyway. Not sure if they may do that for some though. Good Luck! Mary

Melissa, I went to Dr. Robert Straight in DSM. I don't know the exact phone number or address off the top of my head, but he is located by the big Wal-Mart and Sam's Club off the 8th st. exit off of I-235. I had two appointments with him and it all went smooth as silk. He was very knowledgeable about the surgery and what kinds of emotional things go along with it. I could tell he was very well informed about what I was going to go through. jean

Sorry I may have the name wrong since I only saw him once. He is with Mercy Psychiatric Services located at 1750 48th St in Des Moines. The phone number is 271-6300. They were recommended by Mercy Capitol as they deal with the weight loss people a lot. Mary
