COWS!- Not really off topic

My husband is a dairy farmer & I make no secret that I hate farming. However, as a good dairy wife I have chores that I do. Mostly I feed calves. Today there was a new one & my son said he didn't think it had sucked yet so I got a bottle ready & went to feed it. I no sooner than touched the calf when the cow swung around & charged me! She slammed me up against the bars & backed off to come again. I hadn't actually fallen but was off balance & had a hard time getting footing. This time I was yelling & she she just bumped me. She backed again & I managed to get to the gate & out of the pen, yelling all the time. Since the bottle was lying in the pen, I got a shovel & went back in. Yeah, dumb thing to do but I was mad. I hit her a couple times to get her to back up & manged to use the shovel to pull the bottle back where I could reach it. Obviously the calf will either be fed by my adult son or husband or it will have to figure out how to suck on it's own. I am not hurt, luckily. Just a tiny bruise on one arn that I can see now but I'm really shook up. I have heard of cows with calves being unpredictable but this is the first time in over 30 years that I have experienced it. Now, why is this not off topic? If this had happend to me last year, no way would I have been able to move as fast as I did, nor would I have been able to get on my feet the way I did. I probably would have gotten hurt instead of just shook up or, God forbid, even worse. Anyone want to buy a cow...cheap? Dixie

Dixie, Hey, I bet that you had to move faster than a speeding bullet to dodge that hunk of beef!! Glad that you were able to get out of the way. I was always told to never get in between a momma and her calf. I can certainly imagine that you are shook up - I would probably be in tears. Glad that you're alright. God bless, Andrea

OH Dixie Iam so glad you are OK! I bet you were scared to death, I know I would have been! I grew up a city girl and married a farmer and have now llived on the farm for 12 yrs. I still don't drive tractors or do anything on the farm except the bookwork and the cooking lol. Left my hubby hangin from a auger once....needless to say I don't think he trusts me driving the equipment LOL. I like Carolyns idea for a steak fry!!! Hugs, Janet S

Oh, a farmwife after my own heart! After almost 34 years I still don't drive tractor & never learned to milk. I'm no dummy. I knew if I learned I'd be doing it all the time like several of my friends. I no longer even do the bookwork. My computerphobe husband woudn't trust what the computer told him & did everything by hand anyway himself so I decided to quit wasting my time. I'd rather surf & make digital scrapbooks on my computer anyway. Dixie

Thanks everyone for the concern & offers to take her off my hands. Sorry, but she would make nasty steaks- not fattened up so way too tough but boy could we ever have a big barbeque with hamburgers for everyone. By mid afternoon I had convinced myself that I was probably all bruised up under all the layers of clothes I had on so I drew a nice hot bath & guess what? Not one bruise! My ribs on the side where I hit the gate hurt just a bit but not much more than if I had worked out a bit too hard at the gym. The calf seems to be sucking the cow now so I won't have to deal with her until the guys move either her out of the maternity pen or put the cow in a stanchion. They get to deal with the ornery old coot. I would move to the city in a minute! Dixie

Now I know why you're having another surgery -- to get out of chores again!!!! The mean old heifer -- I would have taken the shovel to her too.!!!! Next time can you get pictures for the scrapbook?? Guess we probably won't see you tonite - talk to you soon tho. Hope you are feeling better. Oh and I on the other hand always wanted to be a farm girl, but have always lived in town. Always wanted to marry a farmer, but it never happened. I would love to live in the country and do farm work!! Janie
