I received a letter from my insurance company and I am approved for the surgery. I have to go to the lung doctor next monday for surgery clearance. They will be doing blood gases, can somebody please tell me what that is? The nurse said that it is done at the wrist and is uncomfortable. I am getting very scared now that this is a reality and within reach. Any suggestions from anyone? Thank you. Melissa

Blood gases are drawn from an artery instead of a vein. How much it hurts depends on how good the person doing it is. I've had them dig for awhile, and I've had them hit blood on the first poke. I usually try to give them one good shot, then ask for someone else. It doesn't take long and is not horrible- much easier than child birth! Good luck on your journey! Jeri H.

Happy Dancing all around......... Blood gases determine how much oxygen you have in your blood basically plus some other stuff. It is done on the wrist where you can feel your pulse. Mine did not hurt a bit. Don't get all freaky about it. Go and find a happy place in your head, breath, and relax. It takes only a few seconds. If anyone starts telling you horror stories don't listen. So far the worst part of my WLS experience was the Golytely that I had to drink the night before surgery. Where are you going to have your surgery? Congratulations!!! Melinda

Dear Melissa: Congratulations on your approval!! The blood gases test may be uncomfortable, but it will only last a few seconds!! It's a small insignificant bump, on your journey to better health!! Just think about the new you to come!!! Good luck, you'll join the ranks of losers soon! Take care, DeeAnn
