I had surgery in Grinnell with Dr. Coster over 2 years ago and didnt' have a single problem. My sister, on the other hand, had surgery with Dr. Schwartz and developed a serious leak that almost cost her her life. This can happen at ANY hospital...not just Grinnell...but the thing that popped into my head was this... When my sister was really bad in the hospital, Dr. Eibes was called in to check on her. She could hardly breathe and he thought it could be one of two things....a blood clot or leak. They couldn't give her blood thinners (in case it was a clot) in case it was a leak and they had to go back into surgery. They couldn't go back into surgery in case it was a clot in their opinion. I remember Dr. Eibes saying that night that they didn't have a radiologist on call that evening that could do some particular radiology test to help determine for possible blood clots...and she was too big for the machine they had there to do a scan for clots (although they said she would have been too big for any machine...not just Grinnell's). Flying her to IC would have been too risky that night. It was just a mess really. Dr. Schwartz (her surgeon) came in that night and decided on doing an emergency surgery which determined it was indeed a leak and not the blood clot. I'm all for Grinnell simply because I love Dr. Coster and what he did for me. But the whole "radiologist being outta town that could read some kinda test" thing was really fishy to me...plus the not being able to fit in the machine for a scan thing....eeek. We're incredibly thankful to Dr. Schwartz for saving her life that night.....but part of me wonders if she woulda been better off (being such a big girl) at a bigger hospital. This is just my story (well my sister's actually)...because I know how important it is to get truthful answers when you're going through such a HUGE decision. Best of luck to you and your decision!
