I want to know what the dye test is that you have a few weeks after surgery? I also want to know if having this means that you will never ever be able to eat pizza again? Not even a bite? Just to get the taste? That is seriously my weekness.

hey Michelle Welcome, I can't answer the dye test question maybe someone else can help with that one. But, pizza? Not gonna sugarcoat here, some people can eat it others can't or choose not to. Bread is something that lots of WLS patients have trouble with the doctors and dieticians don't even recommend bread the first year. I myself will tell you pizza is not one of my "good" foods. Sometimes it goes down other times it's BAD. For me I pick off the toppings and the cheese and skip the bread. That seems to work the best. Also I don't even attempt the crust unless it's a thin crust pizza. The good news is that I don't even miss it that much. WLS is a tool that you have live with for the rest of your life. Yeah you give up somethings but you GET SO MUCH MORE!!!!! If you'd like to talk sometime I'd like that. Email me and we figure out a time to chat if you'd like. Michelle, Haven't heard anything about, nor did I have a dye test. Had the leak test the day after surgery and that went fine. You may have to check with your clinic or surgeon to get the full scoup. On a brighter note, I'm 9 months out and I have had pizza. Now, I don't have much and I really don't eat much of the crust at all, not more than a bite or two. Also, I have found that I do better with more vegetarian toppings than with say pepperoni or sausage. But my new insides don't give me much grief if I have a slice of pizza now and again. I know some folks do have more trouble with breads and grease than others. Fatty or greasy doesn't seem to upset me, but then again, I don't eat them everyday like I used to, nor do I eat more than just a few bites. Hope that helps. Pizza was my first real craving after having surgery. I was thrilled to be able to have some! Best wishes to you on your journey! Post again if you have questions! -Deb W.

I didn't have to have the "dye test" so im not sure about that. The pizza thing.. well i have found that if i get THIN AND CRISPY crust...i get less carbs...don't get the "doughy bread icky feelings" that i get with breads. I can eat a couple small pieces of pizza and feel full. I usually get meat lovers thin and crispy from pizza hut. I have tried regular crust pizza and i can eat it..sometimes with no problem..and sometimes im miserable. It just depends. Stick to thin and crispy and you might be ok though! If all else fails...EAT OFF THE TOPPINGS AND LEAVE THE CRUST! IT WORKS! AND YOU STILL GET THE FLAVOR! ~~DAWN PHILLIPS

Pizza was the thing I craved the most. Several weeks ago we went to Godfather's for lunch. I had my one slice of Humble Pie. I ate the toppings and left the crust. It didn't taste nearly as good as I remembered. That took care of my craving for pizza. The guy that took my order was SO funny! I ordered my one slice of pizza. He kept after me, don't you want something to drink? How about some soda? I said no, only pizza. Then he said, how abou****er? It's free! I almost told him I'd take the water but he could keep the pizza since I couldn't do both!

Are you a Mercy patient? I am assuming from your profile that you are. Their procedure is to do a barium swallow test the week after surgery. It only takes a few minutes and they are checking for leaks before they remove your drain tube. Pizza? I still haven't tried pizza yet and I am 9 1/2 months out. I could probably try it, but it is not the best food choice. That is what this surgery is all about, changing our eating habits and pizza would be too tempting for me to even start. Before your surgery Mercy will require you to have a couple visits with the nutritionist and she will provide you with a very detailed list of foods to eat and the weeks/months you can start eating them. Good Luck!

Michelle, Hi and welcome! Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I was out of town. I am unsure about the dye test - I had a leak test the day after surgery. About the pizza, though, yep - I can eat it, although we don't order it often, because I still have control issues with food. Maybe once a month we will order pizza from a local chain. I will usually eat one piece of cheese pizza, but then sometimes graze on the rest throughout the night. Since I know that this is unhealthy, we have come up with some alternatives. When we crave pizza, I make a portabella mushroom pizza and then muffin pizzas for the family. We all get to choose our own toppings and I don't get the carbs. It is a very healthy choice for all of us. Hope this helps. God bless, Andrea P.S. Eating the topping off the pizza is always an alternative also.
