Hi all, I had the consult with Dr Keating today! I thought it went pretty well. He went over the possible risks of surgery and of not having the surgery and okay, he scared the stuffing out of me with both of those! He's going to send in the request for insurance approval and I have to see a lung doctor for surgical clearance because of my asthma and high BMI. More waiting, but I am trying to be patient and besides I looked at my house today and decided I needed the time to get it in order before my relatives come in to help me out after surgery! LOL! He said I would probably be in the hospital for about 4 days--could you all share your length of stay? I was hoping to be out sooner, but my sister just keeps saying "this is a major surgery, don't pu**** too much". I'd love to hear some of your input. Thanks and take care! Judy

Hi Judy: Sounds like you had a productive day. I was in the hospital for 4 days. My surgeon said it would be 3-5 days. I don't think I would have wanted to go home any sooner. I was pretty dependent on assistance for most things except short walks. I had open RNY. I have heard that the stay depends on the type of surgery also. Good Luck, Eileen

Hi judy, wow it's all pretty exciting isn't it. I just got pre-approved last week. My estimated Hospital stay is 2 days. I'm going to have a lap.RNY. If yours is going to be open, I immagen it will be a longer hospital stay. I decided to go to Dr Glas**** in Ceader Falls because at the time, no doctors in Ceader Rapids were doing laproscopic (sp?) RNY's yet. The chance of complications as a result of infection seem to to lower with the lap surgery and recovery is less painfull. In my book less pain is a goooooood thing! If you would like more info.,let me know Blessings, Theresa

Hey Judy congradulations on your first step. Yes the waiting seems like forever. I to am in the same position that you are, waiting. Waiting seems like forever, but in the long run I know it will be well worth it. Take care of yourself, and I want to wish you the best of luck! ~ PAM

Your sister is right, don't pu**** I had open and I was in 5 days. I had a slight problem with my asthma the night before I was originally to go home, day 4, so they kept me to do breathing treatments. For me, five was just right. My docs pretty much left it up to me as to when I was ready to go. It's much better to stay and have people wait on you than to worry about how you are going to do things when you get home. At least for me, even hygeine was a problem until day 4. You just can't bend and reach well at first. The walk in showers with hand held shower heads are great. Lyn 262/230/134

Judy, Welcome to the Iowa boards! Sorry that it has taken so long for me to respond - busy life! Anyway, the surgical consult is the first thing, then it all moves pretty quickly from there, usually. I was in the hopital 4 days, but think that another day or two would have been great. I don't mind being babied at all !! Keep posting so we can get to know you and keep us updated on your progress. God bless, Andrea
