Seeing the surgeon 5/15
Hi,
I have a consult with Dr. Keating scheduled for the 15th. It seems far away but I know the time will actually pass quickly. Can anyone give me a quick overview of what to expect at this consult? His nurse said that he may or may not request a pulmonary consult because he sometimes does that for people with a BMI over 50.
I've got myself revved mentally and ready to go and I just got kind of down thinking about the wait to the consult and then maybe having to wait to get into another doctor for yet another consult.
Thanks for listening to my moaning and groaning.
Judy
I assume you mean 6/15? It will be here before you know it. Not knowing where you are in the process, I can't really tell you what to expect. My doctor, Dr. Sundberg in Boone, requires us to attend a seminar before anything else. Then we can request the packet of stuff to fill out. Once that is submitted, I had to have a pysch eval before BC would give final approval. Once that was done, then I saw the surgeon. Then they set up all the pre-op tests - Upper GI, chest x-ray, labs, pulmonary function, dietician, and physical therapist. Three days after all that, I met with the anesthesiologist. Then 2 weeks later, surgery. When it started moving, it moved really fast. It takes 3 months from the seminar to surgery generally for his program. Mine was 3 days shy of that. And I didn't have any problem with insurance that some people seem to have.
Make a list of questions for him. The better informed you are the less nasty surprises there will be.
Good luck!
You assumed correctly! It is 6/15, I think I'm just stuck in May for some reason.
I've done the info session/seminar and had the pysch eval so that's out of the way. Thanks for the other info, now I kind of have an idea about what all else will need to be done prior to surgery. I'm just overly anxious I guess.
Thanks again!
Judy
Hi Judy,
Good Luck to you!!! All surgeon's are different with their requests, so it's hard to answer that one. Be sure to have a list of questions with you & make sure he answers all of them! BMI over 50?! Time will pass faster than you think, the 15th is just right around the corner!! Keep us posted!

Hi,
My husband had Dr. Keating for his RNY surgery done in 10/03. The Dr. is very good and knows what he is talking about because he has had the same surgery himself.
My husband had to go through the pulmonary test, blood work, chest xrays, seminar at St. Lukes (had to go to that before he could see the Dr.for consult). He had his consult, I think, in late July or early August. Had to wait to see the pulmonologist but as soon as that was out of the way the surgery was scheduled for 2 weeks later.
The time goes way faster than you realize.
My husband had a checkup with Dr. Keating last week. He has officially lost 150 pounds since 10/03. The Dr. said he was one of his star patients.
Good luck on your journey.
Carol
